What determines which aircraft you fly on a mission in career mode when your squadron has multiple?

The squadron I'm flying has lagg-3's and la-5's and I keep getting a lagg. Does career performance, damage to your plane or roughing it up on landing affect which one you fly or is it just random? Yes I know I could just set myself to commander.

If your leader puts you in a Lagg3 all the times when La5s are available, I would advise you to keep a close eye on him. He obviously wants to get rid of you.

You could also move to another squadron  ( a squadron that has your preferred aircraft type assigned ) .  Depending on career speed , this switch should only take a small number of  " career days " .  I normally / usually pull this stunt when i want to stay close to the front lines in career ?.
