pappy2 Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Hello everyone, I'm looking into how it works and how to create missions with the ILS as a guide to a landing strip. Thanks in advance
Ulricus Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 (edited) Hi Pappy2, this is explained in this forum entry: especially the last entry explains it in more detail. Edited April 3, 2024 by Ulricus 2

Thanks in advance You can kill 2 birds with one stone. Start a quick mission with the localizer added, start on the runway. The beacon will be behind you (NDB). Takeoff and do a normal pattern to land and watch the vertical needle line up. The horizontal needle (glideslope) has too narrow of a band to be off much use. Now after closing the mission, you can go into the editor and load the .gen mission you were just in. Look for NOICON on the left menu or the truck icon near the runway. Here you can access the ndb (under vehicles in right menu) and look at the properties to see how it is activated for the side you want it for. You can also measure how far from the runway these are auto generated in quick missions etc. Obviously these can be placed to locate a runway and also do a blind landing, but they could also be used to mark an intended drop zone as a Rebecca/Eureka transponder for a para/supply drop in the middle of nowhere. When you pass over the beacon and the needle deflects fully to one side, you know you are over the drop zone. 2
pappy2 Posted April 4, 2024 Author Posted April 4, 2024 Hello friends, Thanks for the info “Ulricus” I will look at all that. Thanks also to you "Plurp" I'm going to try what you recommended, it seems quite easy to use. Good flights
JG4_Deciman Posted April 5, 2024 Posted April 5, 2024 (edited) Hi For activating 'ils' (so the beacon sender) just place an 'ndb' with zhe relating nation and activated radio wherever you want. But keep in mind 2 facts: First: It will be the 'active' beacon signal for every plane of that coalition if it's the closest sender Second: To place that on a 'landing strip' during invasion the sender would have to be installed first by the resistance (or other ground forces) on enemy territory And prior to the invasion the germans were constantly searching for resistance radio signals. So installing a beacon transmitter would have only lead them directly to the landing strip... So I guess that activating a beacon transponder was never done there... Deci PS: I also know that the germans had a radio navigation system based on transmitters on their own territory used for bombers. They needed at least 2 transmitters from different locations to calculate their position (so an early kind of gps) And maybe the allied had the same... But that is not implemented in game. And the 'manual' selection of transmitters is also not possible. So no way to set the receiver of an plane to a specific senders frequency - what would make the 'radio frequency navigation' by cockpit instruments as it was in that time (and still is today) - and would make the 'eary gps navigation' also be available (by placing additional 'ndb's) Edited April 5, 2024 by JG4_Deciman 1
