Todt_Von_Oben Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 (edited) Is anyone here using the Quest 3 in a VR cockpit sim pod? How's it? Also, I've read we have to buy a monthly subscription to Meta to get the Quest 3 working. Really? I only fly IL2 Sturmovik so I'm not interested in the free games that come monthly with the subscription. I have Steam and IC; plus Oculus and HP headsets. Do I really have to buy a monthly subscription to Meta just to use my Q3 to fly FC? ? I have a Fokker D7F fuselage VR sim pod. At the moment I'm using CH controls but will eventually convert to Arduino-operated replica Fokker stick and rudder pedals, throttle and mixture quadrants, a functional mag switch, operable charging handles on the Spandaus, etc. I hope it will adapt well to the the Quest 3 with Passthrough viewing. I think the advancements in VR technologies over the past couple years have been great. Last year, Passthrough-capable headsets were extremely expensive. Now, at about 500 bucks, the Quest 3 looks great but if there's a monthly fee that I can't somehow avoid, it's at least gonna take some of the fun out of it for me. Your thoughts and experiences are encouraged. S! Edited March 27, 2024 by Todt_Von_Oben

Really? Hell no. You don't. BTW Setup the pass through on real cockpit might be the painful expiernce. They use that with Vario areo, they can see and click real swiches on physical panels and see virtual world environment . Edited March 27, 2024 by 1PL-Husar-1Esk

But I wonder why there are so many articles online making it seem like a monthly subscription is necessary? So, are you saying Q3 will work with Steam and FC through my Windows 10 computer and I won't have to pay a monthly subscription to something I really don't want? That'd be great. I'm using Q3 , I would know it ? Yes but better use wifi via Virtual Desktop with openXR runtime or cable link via oculus software. SteamVR runtime is bad in terms of the performance vs Open XR runtime. Btw i know about optional pay subscription that give you access to some games in meta store but that is not what you described. I have the Oculus cable and may already have the Virtual Desktop; gotta check. Do you use the passthrough vision function much? Your thoughts about that? At this point, I'm pretty much sold. Going to go find a Q3 online and buy it ASAP. Thanks again. S!

I have no idea what articles you read, but the subscription is only to get access to a selection of standalone games each month. This can be a good deal for a beginner to VR, who wants to try out a bunch of games to figure out what they want, before buying games at full price. This has nothing to do with being able to use games with VR support that you bought in the meta store or for PC. All of those work without any subscriptions or such. Do keep in mind that setting things up right can be difficult, since there are a lot of settings you can change and options for how you connect the headset to the PC. I use it in some experiences and games but never set it up on top of any sim game. It's ok, but passthrough cam quality are not that great, just enough. 1

Basically, you use the computer graphics program to make what they call a "box" the shape you want the visible part of your cockpit interior to be. It uses "green screen" technologies to let you see the cockpit and controls, and beyond that is the virtual airspace environment. Looked pretty easy to do and adjust. My cockpit is a simple shape, even with the guns. I think it will be doable if not easy.

He shows his panel build and explains a little bit about making the "box" that masks the cockpit interior from the virtual environment. 6 minutes ago, 1PL-Husar-1Esk said: You gonna be using USB cable or wifi? Todt_Von_Oben Posted March 27, 2024 Author Posted March 27, 2024 (edited) I'm ready to buy a Q3 but have one more question. EDIT: Found the answers online. One pleasant surprise: the Q3 has a IPD range of up to 75mm. That's larger than my 68mm G2 and (finally) big enough for me. Sold! I'm buying online as soon as I post this. Thanks for the help. ? EDIT 2: I pulled the trigger. $485 shipped to my door from Amazon; $508 after taxes. ? Edited March 27, 2024 by Todt_Von_Oben 1
Aapje Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 The Q3 has a very large sweet spot and is thus far more forgiving of having the IPD not be exactly right, anyway. 1
