CanadaOne Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 What's a good space game if you just enjoy flying around looking at the pretty colours and occasionally obliterating a planet or two? Is that an Elite dangerous thing?

There's not so much of the planet obliterating either. 1

I haven't really played it for a couple of years, unfortunately once you have grinded, have every ship fully engineered, are worth 12 billion and have 4 billion credits lying there, you don't have anything really left to do that you haven't already. I check back in very occasionally, but until the next major update (next year now) which keeps getting pushed back it seems, meh. One day I still dream of flying through atmospheres in elite..... 1

DD_fruitbat Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 Yep, definitely worth $10. It's still a very beautiful game despite my negativity above, I have played it for hundreds of hours!
scram77 Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 I’m looking forward to them bringing in space legs next year. I would love to walk around the shops so hope that’s possible
Redwo1f Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 SpaceBourne may be worth a look too https://store.steampowered.com/app/732240/SpaceBourne/

The game is way way easier in progression now to, compared to initial release, but you won't be going to the very very edge of the galaxy very quickly i'm afraid, that requires not so much money, but G5 engineering, and that can't be bought. The bottom or top (which is completely arbitrary) in the centre is a nice view though. Damn that was a long time ago!

Got to a point where I was supposed to destroy an armed drone, would hit it a hundred times with no effect, then have the narrator tell me how powerful my weapons are, then hit it another hundred times, then keep getting dragged back to the training area, which seems to be about 10' x 10', then hit the drone another hundred times with no effect, then get dragged back, then hit the drone a hundred times, then get dragged back... "**** *** Elite Dangerous training phase" I'm off to the edge of the galaxy, and if the game doesn't like it, it can go blow a goat.
Feathered_IV Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 I've never hit a single thing in Elite. I just avoid all conflict and go about my business.

Combat in elite is ridiculously easy (PvE), if you take a little bit of time to understand the 'rules'. One of the main reasons I stopped playing, the complete disparity between humans and the AI. And that's not because the AI couldn't be better, but because a large amount of the player base cried in a defining chorus with wails its hard to imagine, when they could no longer be god, in a beta way back when.

Tyberan Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 I got SC and find it hard to figure what you are supposed to do, so I fire it up occasionally to see how it's going, get annoyed with the 15min loading times and give up. With ED I got bored, pretty much felt like a space truck driver.

Some people reported seeing it after a recent patch but it was fixed within days.

No combat, and that's fine, but great space graphics and tons of exploring to do. I want pretty space pictures. 1

I'm sure it can be a lot of fun, but my brain doesn't seem willing to invest the energy. But Space Engine looks cool. Free HD scenery DLs of the Earth, the moon, and Neptune. 10GB each. That's beaucoup scenery!

Charlo-VR Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Yup, Star Citizen is often called the The Best Damn Screenshot Maker Ever for all sorts of reasons, including the above (and this shot of a buddy and me in my Reliant a few months ago)

Yeah, I was ready to back during the original kickstarter... and then they extended the stretch goals... and extended them again... and... the feature creep and promises are what caused me to walk away. I did eventually pick it up with the intention of eventually flying a Reliant (is it a Fw-189 or a Gotha P.60?) on a sightseeing tour. However, there is no clarity on things like whether their insurance system will penalise people who play only intermittently (i.e. by being important and running down when you are offline). This is a problem as the insurance system could easily turn into a "freemium-style" pay-to-progress system. They could easily design it so one has to play many hours per week or constantly put real money into it to progress. They've also primarily been hunting whales by focusing on large multi-crew ships (pitched to people who are part of large orgs and committed for social reasons). They might pivot to solo or more casual (i.e. less than 4 hours per week) players after release... maybe... hence why I figure I might only get to use it as a sight-seeing game. There is also the issue that tech-requirements keep creeping up as a result of the game being in development for so long... oh, and they reset player progress every month because it is an alpha. I project them reaching their initial 'release goal' (where they claimed they'd allow player progress i.e. I could earn that sight-seeing reliant)... sometime in 2022-2024. They should have maybe 4 out of 9 promised game-loops and 3-4 star systems by then... assuming they can the underlying architecture in place to allow a game-space that large. The other thing I'll say - it might not be worth buying anything from them - but it is pretty interesting to watch the development from the side-lines. Plenty of room for getting popcorn and just seeing how it all plays out. 1

It seems like they're working on everything except a space game. The space combat looks like a remastered wing commander except possibly worse- at least in wing commander IV the missiles worked and felt sufficiently deadly. As near as I can tell the guns of the far future are apparently less effective than american M2 on a P-47. Most recent patch notes showed a bartender AI, like it was a main feature? There's some kind of battlefield clone in the works? The FPS segments I've seen just look like the most horrible lag you've ever seen on WoL except all the time, and the AI makes Il-2's look like a bunch of mensa candidates. So glad I didn't back way back in the day, I was a prime target for anything that looked like an updated wing commander. Good thing I was poor. 1 2

There are. There really are. Very large, and with a great abundance of concrete. And like any civilization that has advanced beyond stone knives and bear skins, you do not have to exit the spaceport to plan your next mission, and then go back into the spaceport to to enable it, and then back out of the spaceport to change one small thing, and then back into the spaceport to enable it again. The future is a great place!

Far worse. "Interactive mode" (which means the mouse controls direction of flight AND gimballed weapons simultaneously) breaks the game for me. The fact that mouse users can literally point and click to blow up spaceships is laughable for the "BDSSE".

That reminds me of Freelancer controls, which was a fun little game but not what I would call a space 'sim'. Also what does "BDSSE" stand for? I mean that kind of control wouldn't be so bad if the combat model wasn't 'dogfights in space' but something more realistic. But if you're engaging enemies at visual range then point and click combat is not very satisfying. 1
