Charon Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 Intercooler shutters on the P-38J are controlled by a pair of toggles (Open-Off-Close) underneath the yoke, next to the oil and water toggles. Unlike the radiators, which were automatic, the intercooler shutters in the P-38 were manual only, just like in the P-47. On versions prior to the P-38J, these were in the wing leading edge and the pilot did not control them. In the sim, they appear to be always open. It seems like it would be easy enough to add them to the P-38: they would function just like the P-47s intercoolers, with the same keybindings, and excessive carb air temperature would result in reduced power. 1
[CPT]Crunch Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 They are controllable, but effectively don't do anything. They can be bound and moved with an axis, but you'll never get any warning message, nor a movement in % message. There's no detectable impact on airspeed either. 1
Charon Posted March 8, 2024 Author Posted March 8, 2024 Really? Which axis? I tried the Intercooler axis with both buttons and with a physical axis and wasn't able to move either the switches or the shutters themselves.
[CPT]Crunch Posted March 10, 2024 Posted March 10, 2024 Engine outlet cowl shutters control A-20 Fw-190 A-5,6,8 La-5 Ju-88 P-40 P-47 C-47 IAR80, and not listed is P-38 because it's animation only. 2
Charon Posted March 11, 2024 Author Posted March 11, 2024 Thank you, you're exactly right as far as I can tell. Well, it would be nice if these could be modeled fully: if the switches in the cockpit could move and if the position would affect drag, carb air temp, and power.
