Spitfire Formation Lights

At times, it's best to not use nav lights but to use the underside formation lights. The problem is the light is brighter than even the nav lights. Formation lights should be subtle and only viewable close-up, not a grid away. Any way you can fix this by toning down the intensity please?

Is there any modern footage of these formation lights in use on rebuilt Allied aircraft? I've seen countless P-51s, P-47s, Spits at EAA Airventure. But never see these lights used in the evening or at night during the airshow. Would love to see how they looked in real life.
