It would be great if a desert map could be added to the Great Battles series, perhaps Tobruk? It would be good having a proper selectable map to use aircraft with the tropical liveries rather than having the hassle of loading modded Stalingrad and Kuban as a substitute when you wish to play desert based scenarios.

A map like Tobruk would probably be suitable for a 3rd party project. It would be much easier to do than a European map. The number of towns and roads is limited, there are no rivers and forests and the landscape is rather uniform, so no large amount of map texturing work would be necessary. The only problem would be that almost all buildings have to be created from scratch.

As well as the foliage (the little there is). But yeah, it's probably one of the easiest map for 3rd parties to do. Even the architecture is relatively simple compared to, say, Vyborg.

Convert the Tobruk map from CLOD? Doable?

Personally, I feel a 3rd party doing a Tunisia map would be the better option as what high-fidelity WW2 combat sim has Tunisia? None to my knowledge. As I said yesterday in a thread, it would also bring us Malta and Sicily. As a note, the map can start with just Tunisia and maybe Malta as Phase I while Sicily arrives in Phase II.

Well...however they do it. I'll buy it. Yes on Sicily and Malta.

And Crete to?

A Map DLC. DCS does it. There is a lot of life in this sim yet with more maps.

No, you cannot bring the Tobruk map over here, it’s a completely different game engine. It’s like trying to bring something from IL-2 1946 into Rise of Flight. You would have to make the Tobruk map from scratch.

Well, not from scratch. CloD has heightmaps, 3d models and textures just as IL2 (or any game for that matter) has. It's just a matter of re-converting all the source files :) It's still a *lot* of work, don't get me wrong, but the hardest parts are basically already done.

Anyhow, I don't think Team Fusion is just gonna hand over their models/assets, so none of this really matters.

Tunisia would be doable, but a lot harder given that the landscape is more varied. Especially if you're gonna add Malta. The sheer amount of landmarks on that small island alone makes the average 3d artist shudder. Sicily too has an entirely different architectural style.

The great part about Tobruk is that it's mostly desert. I think that one could make a decent impression of eastern Libya / western Egypt from just east of Benghazi up to El Alamein with 20 generic buildings, 2 generic mosques, 5 palm trees and 5 shrubs. And 5 or so ground textures.

Anyhow, I've said it before and I'll say it again - if there's a couple of people with lots of experience in 3d modeling and texturing, let me know and who knows what comes out of it :)

Guys, there is no way, shape or form that CloD assets are being brought over to GB, if for no other reason that 1CGS no longer holds the publishing rights to it.

So please, once again, as I have stated in the past, discussion about anything CloD belongs in the CloD forum.
