"Bogged down at Cherkasskoe"

Battle of Kursk, July 5th 1943

In the first few hours of Operation Citadel, XXXXVIII Panzer Corps, with 464 tanks and 89 assault guns, attacked northward from the Gertsovka-Butovo area. The Grossdeutschland Panzer Division's 350 tanks and assault guns held the center and was flanked by 3rd Panzer and 11 Panzer Divisions. Before reaching Cherkasskoe, the panzers became stuck in the deep mud of the Berezhovyi stream and minefields which brought the attack to a halt. All this happened while Soviet anti-tank guns and artillery fired at the bogged down panzers. At around 0700 the Sturmoviks attacked!

Mission: A flight of Stukas must attack enemy artillery and vehicles at Cherkasskoe.

"The Bridges over Northern Donets"

Battle of Kursk, July 6, 1943

On the first day of Operation Citadel, Army Detachment Kempf was to attack across the Northern Donets River at Belgorod. Five German divisions assaulted the 81st Guards Rifle Division of of the 7th Guards Army at the Mikhailovka bridgehead. However, for the first several hours, hardly any aircraft from either side were in the skies above this battlefield. The attacking German troops suffered heavy losses and this forced Kempf to cancel the attack in this sector and shift the emphasis of the attack to a sector farther south where more success was gained. By mid-afternoon, Sturmovik units of 17 VA were finally ordered to attack the German pontoon bridges and ferries across the Donets. Luftwaffe fighters were then called in to protect the ground troops and inflicted heavy losses on the attacking Sturmoviks.

Mission: Destroy enemy tanks between Krutoy Log and Razumnoe.

"2nd Guards Tank Corps at Nepkhaevo"

July 6, 1943

On July 6th the Soviet 2nd Guards Tank Corps launched its counter-offensive across the Lipovyi Donets River against II SS Panzer Corps' right flank in concert with another tank attack by the 96th Tank Brigade to the south. The Luftwaffe ground attackers responded heavily to repel this threat, as did elements of SS Panzer Division Totenkopf. As in XXXXVIII Panzer Corps' sector, obscure battles along the flanks were already quietly assuming decisive importance.

Mission: Stop the enemy tank attack from the east, near Nepkhaevo.

I run out of ammo at the end but was still able to chase away the enemy and save the friendly ground troops but then I almost get plastered into a mountain as I was sightseeing!
