In praise of the IAR80

I must say, I’m absolutely loving the IAR, what a beautiful looking aircraft, great visibility as well, and the sound of the engine as well, sounds fab when you pour on the coals! So refreshing as well to fly something that’s a bit different. Not bad in combat either, started a career off in Kuban and it’s going well so far. But yeah, looking forward to the next version of the IAR, be interesting to see the difference.

you'll need a proper skin for this little devil's testing, on Haluter's, pity Transylvania is not anywhere on the current maps yet.:

I quite like it, not the fastest around or most manoeuvrable, but it’s ok, the standard armament is a challenge, in my Kuban career, I sank all my ammo into an A20 and the brute kept flying ?

Yes, it's a very unique plane and you really have to fly smart with it to be successful and not be shot down.

For one thing, you'll have 20 mm cannons during Kuban, so no more bombers soaking up bullets like a sponge. ?

What is the difference between them? One with longer wings? Is there a different engine?

And another question is it just me or is it rolling to one side pretty heavily? I was first thinking my joystick was about to give inn, but did not affect any other planes i tried.

I love it too!   I just hope Pat puts it in PWCG!

I tried career in game and I understand the historical context, but doing escort duty gets old.

Yeah I’ve had 3 of them and a bomber intercept mission.

Glad you guys are enjoying this. Hopefully there will be many more collaborative efforts to follow.

The only problem is that the campaign is terrifyingly boring, probably only 4-5 single scenarios, even the targets are the same. The map is empty too.

Hopefully someone coud make a campaign for it. Maybe with some good backstory to teach us some history of romanian fighter pilots ??

It is unique, the balance, the sliding trail skid, no other plane lifts it's hind end as quickly.  They made a very good overall fighter for 1941.

Same engine, slightly different airframe which changes the handling a bit. With this model, you'll also have the option to fit the plane with 20 mm MG-FF/M cannons or MG 151/20s of the last production series, which was by far the most common variant.

The Romanians were heavily involved in the Axis advance into Russia and on the Stalingrad front, both ground and air forces. There is easily enough information and available  time period with the appropriate map and airfields to do an IAR80 scripted campaign. After that, I believe they were mostly involved in defending the Romanian airspace over their oil fields around Ploesti from Allied heavy bomber raids.

I did some research to make the single mission that has already been released, so yes.

Yes, you should. It is historically based. I believe it is under Single Missions / IAR-80 Stalingrad Patrol. Historically the accompanying flight was Romanian 109Fs, but it wasn't worth it to add a new skin just for a single mission.

The two volumes of "Barbarossa To Odessa" describes a lot of IAR80 missions

Very interesting ...

What about the map ? ;)

I bump this tread. IAR 80 and P 40 refurbish has really gotten me into flying again.
