Winter Wonderland (zimnyaya skazka) is a 12-mission single player scripted campaign in which the Player will fly the LaGG-3 on the Velikie Luki Winter map.  Missions are from January 17 - January 22, 1942.  The time period is during the Toropets - Kholm Offensive which began on January 9, 1942.  The Soviet 4 SAD, the air division assigned to support the 4th Shock Army, consisted of only LaGG-3, I-15bis, and U2vs aircraft.

 

***Notes:  

*At this time, we do not have an early-version-LaGG-3, such as the series 8 or 11 which was historically used during this time period, so, the later version-series 29, which became available in June 1942 is used instead.

*A mission is successful when the player destroys a target on a mission.  So, if a target is destroyed, it is not necessary to make a landing at the home airfield.  However, You have the option to land, refuel, and re-arm to takeoff again to destroy more targets.

*For the first nine missions you must taxi-to-the-runway on a frozen lake. (You may use the autopilot (Shift+A) to taxi and takeoff).  The last three missions start on the runway with engine running.

*Missions have short flight times.

*Mission descriptions are in English-only, sorry.

*Book cited:  Black Cross Red Star volume 2 by Christer Bergstrom.

I wanted to do something on the Velikie Luki Winter map and for the LaGG and so I found the Toropets-Kholm Offensive.  But there were no airfields to use in the upper right corner of the map, so, I got the idea to use the frozen lake as a hidden forward airfield.  This map, to me, is like a winter wonderland and that's how I got the title.

Hey, there is no rush.  They will always be here so just get to it whenever you can.

I've been in a Winter Frame of Mind so that's why I'm pumping out the winter campaigns!

But at least the missions are short and don't take too long.

Flew the first mission, destroyed everything that was marked on the airfield flew back to home field and landed successfully but still got the message " Mission Failed "

is there some hidden task that needs to be completed ?

If you destroy two airplanes on the airfield you should get a Mission Accomplished, even if you get killed.  I just tested it.

Completed the first mission, with the second I cheated and ticked the unlimited ammo box knowing that the AI only go along for the ride !

I knocked out every tank and s/p with bombs and the 35mm cannon that I could find, flew back to my home field and got a " you are leaving the combat zone " message landed but still got the failed message, so there is obviously a tank or two tucked away somewhere, but after all that I still enjoy flying the Lagg and the missions are very good with hardly any enemy flak or fighters to worry about.

Well, the target is at Gerashina and you only need to kill 1 vehicle.  The problem is that the SUCCESS is not triggering the LOGIC for MISSION ACCOMPLISHED...I don't know how that got changed but I will fix it later today!  Sorry.

Thanks for that, everything now seems to working correctly, I don't think that you really have to apologize, you obviously put a lot of work into these campaigns and missions

for us all to able to fly and enjoy, and it's all part of a learning curve, personally I would not now where to start, so thanks again for your time and effort.

Just finished the first mission.

Short mission but quite fun I have to say. Especially the start up and taxi to the runway - part, for me personally is one thing I really enjoy.

 

And the landing approach....ok kind of challenging when coming from the east by such a narrow runway - allmost felt like a bush pilot.?

The start up and taxi part is for the people who requested that last year.  This campaign is for those who requested.  Taxiing fits well into these missions because of the terrain around the lake.  It's a nice setting.

Most of my campaigns will still be on the runway with engine running.

Things at my real job have slowed down this winter so I've had more free time to play.  I won't be able to churn out campaigns as fast when business picks up again. ?

I´ve just finished several missions, this is a really great campaign. I don´t fly LaGG very often so this is a great opportunity to do so. But I wish I had Typhoon instead (it´s not easy to hit those tiny tanks with those weak rockets :-)) Thank´s a lot!

You're all welcome!  Hitting with Rockets takes practice but it is possible.  If you can't hit with rockets just use 20mm cannon to knock out half-tracks.

Mission 9 Couldn't get out from behind the tree.

I was about to post the same comment.  I tried swinging her round on the brakes with full throttle but stuck hard (and even on autopilot the plane did not move!).

That tree was not there when I made these missions!  

Maybe the new update changed the trees???

Before the update there was no problem.  

I assume you also had no problems with missions 4-8.  Those also started in the same spot but without the tree!  am I right?  Now, there is a tree right in the spot where I defininitely would not have put the airplane.

 

What to do now?  Edit all the missions?

 

I edited missions 1-9 because trees caused problems.

This is a great campaign for a plane which to date (as far as I am aware) hasn't been the mainstay in any other campaign - so many thanks for this (and for the very rapid 'tree-felling' you have just carrried out!).

Thank you kafa131 for pointing that out.  At first, I thought it cannot be! 

It turns out, that in my rush to fix the missions, I actually edited some of the single player missions instead of the campaign's missions!

Hi CzechTexan,

 

Flew the first mission of Winter Wonderland and loved the ambience of the take-off sequence!  I destroyed a parked Ju-52 with my rockets, flew back to my airfield, landed successfully, and taxied back to my starting place.  The after-action report and map showed I had destroyed the Ju-52, but I didn't get a completed mission.  The campaign didn't advance to Mission 2.

 

What did I do wrong?

You didn't destroy enough planes.
