Mistralfred901 Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 Hi everyone, I've been trying to make skins with Gimp. I'm having trouble preparing my letters and serial numbers. With freehand selection, I select numbers and letters that I then rework with Gimp on a project. But most of the time I can't select the number or letter to place on my layer, and some of my numbers or letters have jagged edges. What do you do?
Hanu Posted February 8, 2024 Posted February 8, 2024 (edited) I'm not sure if I got this question correctly, but usually I simply use correct or nearly correct font in text box and write them as own layer. If I need to modify it Ill just tune it up with warp transform tool manually. For example DetCord shared fonts he used some years ago: If you meant that you pick the letter/number from the some other photo which has quite peculiar not-easilly-reproducable font of number, it should have quite good resolution to begin with. You could even increase the source image resolution, then draw the outlines over the alphabet with freehand, create new layer while keeping the selection active and fill the selection with the desired color. (you do not have to actually pick the texture, just the shape) Then you'd have a clean layer with desired alphabet to move to actual project. Sometimes I increase the contrast, pick the letters/texts with "select by color" or "fuzzy select" and create new layer and just fill those selections. Sure they are jagged in the beginning, but I smooth these edges with smudge tool etc. Gimp G'MIC filters (just google it) can help sometimes, but I usually smooth them out manually. I hope I answered your question somewhat. Gimp is a great tool for skinning. I've had no reason to get Photoshop for this. Edited February 8, 2024 by Hanu 1

Check out the skinning resourses thread...there is a lot of stuff in there that may be helpful for you,
