Career mode needs more starting phases or a way to choose the date

I have FC1 & 2, but why does the career mode so few phases? I want to fly asap, when my planes are available. I had to progress until April 1917 and even on rapid option it took eons to do. Is this intentional, for obvious reasons?

I agree, this is strange situation. In RoF we can choose a proper day and almost immediately fly with plane we want to. Please make this change in FC.
