I recently had the problem the other way around.

The German AF defense were willfully firing pot shots at the 'neutral' land canvases on the airstrip, in their wisdom.

Not sure why land canvases aren't static objects anyway (they generate an icon each), but I digress..

Overall though, what's the point in being neutral if you're going to get involved in the fighting ?

Perhaps there's a coalitions option somewhere..

The reason of all this is the definition for 'neutral' in il2 as a coalition

There 'neutral' is the same as 'enemy of all others'

PS:

Same for any other nation:

same coalition -> friend

different coalition -> enemy

The neutral coalition is always hostile by default. You can change it if you want to.

Yes, but...

Makes (nearly) no difference on multiplayer servers

For one of the 'used' coalitions the 'neutrals' are hostile...

PS: Or better for 'at least one' used coalition.

Never tried to use more than 2 coalitions, but including WW1  coalitions that could work...

So i take it that you can never set say a c47 plane to UN, or RED Cross as third neutral party never to be bothered by whatever country.

I was planning on some 'peace keeping' type mission where someone like the Dalai Lama or maybe even a Pope freely moves around unbothered.

No tricks thus in accomplishing that alas ....

You can set it to 'not attackable' and it will be ignored by AI.

But whenever it comes close to an airfield it will be shown as an attacker.

Same as when you use 'neutral' land canvace to place some markings on an airfiels.

It is instantly marked as 'under attack by tanks'...

If you set an airfield to Neutral also?

No (in case you mean alerts when neutral planes/vehicles are close to it)

It seems that the AI handles every unit (vehicle/plane) with a different nation as 'enemy'

So having a neutral airfield for letting a player be the dalai lama and let him spawn in and fly

his plane would be in 'neutral' coalition

and treated as enemy by any other coalition.

PS: Airfields report any unit (plane/vehicle)

that has not the same coalition as the airfield

as enemy on the ingame map
