WitchyWoman Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 (edited) booted up the GOG version of RB3d with hells angels resurrection, fm updates, and some other goodies in 3dfx. This sim is still great. The graphics aren't as bad as old electronic arts polygons with no detail. Its still fun? So many modern sims would benefit from a campaign system like it has. Mtnbiker1998 Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Agreed, campaign systems really do add a ton. GB is admittedly better than most of the modern competition currently, wiyh its career mode (and PWCG of course!) but still far from good. Hopeully the devs are keeping this in mind for their "new project" Most of my sim flying lately has been in Falcom BMS, its absolutely incredible seeing a whole air and ground campaign unfold with ai commanders running the show, and your F-16 just one piece in a huge, complex puzzle. Just wish I could play these old games in vr, theres just no way I can go back to simflying on a flatscreen.
Flashy Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Loved this game back in the day.. and the 3dfx patch was truly game-changing when it came out! The best thing about RBII was its manual though.. I must've read through the history section of that manual about 10 times! 1

If you fly this with the Hells Angels mod and add Ressurection to it, the new 3d pits and exterior lods and damage update, it really does have a lot of miles left of fun despite its age. Some of the graphics are still great plus it has the Morane monoplane which has not been seen in other sims (although WOFF is planning to add it to the next DLC soon) The sites still offering all the downloads for Red Baron 3d too. http://www.hellsangels.firstflare.com/main.htm And I do love BMS. Especially the F4 phantom mods/pits for it and the Israel theater map. Falcons really come a long way and is certainly still the best Dynamic campaign system ever devised (although F22 TAW/ EF2000 and EECH hold that title equally) and really should be the foundation for any flight sim developer that wants to attempt such a campaign system. I do know one of the old DID developers even offers advice on how he accomplished that engine. I wish more modern developers would take his advice. There certainly would be a lot more happy customers! And as far as manuals, that's another rant of mine. All the old games came with basically a book on historical information on the era of the sim you bought. Reference data on all friendly and opfor vehicles and aircraft. It was enjoyment alone to pour over the manuals of a simulation back then on a couch. No crappy PDF to access like now that goes over very little of any of that. They actually taught you something about history. People can applaud graphics these days but almost every other aspect of gaming has gone down hill..... Often lacking quality, mechanics, content, and in many cases, broken and abandoned. Many modern games just do not come close to anything we had before. Thats what we have come too these days.? CountZero Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 they dont have to do all that because there is many ppl who will just judge game by its graphics also just look what they are recently doing with mk.IX spit, as long there is ppl who will reward min effort with money they do not have to try that hard to impress
PatrickAWlson Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 Spent many hours working on the Western Front Patch for this game. We got 100 planes ion by the time we were done.
