Sounds like fun!

If you plan to fly it you might want to download it and get your stuff setup before the even or you might find yourself fumbling around.

You could always be a gunner though. I don't think you even need a joystick for that if I recall correctly.

No joystick required but it is very highly recommended. All planes, vehicles, and guns are controllable by mouse and keyboard.

AH3 also is friendly to VR.

Always a good idea to get settings squared away and make yourself comfortable offline first.

How is this compared to Warthunder, IL2, and DCS? I played Air Warrior back in the day and I think this is the spiritual successor right? I always liked the larger number of players online in one game, and the ability to capture bases was fun too. Great gameplay. But I'm dating myself and talking AOL in 1997 here :)

How much does it cost a month to play after the trial?

Come on back! There are no shortage of the old Air Warrior vets in Aces High lol!

You pretty much described it as it is today. AH has a lot of unique things that those others do not. Player numbers aren’t like the old days but getting about 130 in prime time and more for the scenarios and FSO’s. It’s 14.99 a month after the trial.

No charge to download and start flying offline if you want to get familiar again. You can wait a bit and sign up for the account closer the scenario if you want to try it during the two week trial.

Cool maybe I'll check it out for Big Week. I actually remember Air Warrior III doing that in the late 90's. How's VR work compared to IL2?

I do not use VR since I have a 55” screen but from all accounts it’s a game changer and AH handles it very well.

You should pop in the AH forum ahead of time you will for sure find some old AW friends. In fact a few days ago people were looking up old Air Warrior stats lol. What was your AW call sign?

There is also a section solely for VR if you have specific questions. AH BBS

What site has the old AW stats? I'll have to check that out. I was in 7th or 8th grade, I was probably terrible. <f16> or <f-16> something like that. I flew with a squadron too, but the name of the squad escapes me. I remember our CO's name was Chunks, or Chnks something like that. And the best pilot in our squad was Dark9. Maybe the Warhawks, Warhammers, something like that. Idk.

I would get up early before school at like 6am and fly a B-17 below radar and bomb all the factories for mega points while only a handful of other people were playing online. Also have fond memories of being a gunner on a fully crewed B-17, and we came across another B-17 and got in an epic dogfight of bombers. Great times. Back when you had unlimited free time to play games.

I am not sure where they got them but I will post this screenshot in the forum and see what happens. AH is still full of old AW pilots.

Sure do Luse… bunch of four engine bombers to fly. Here is the AH plane list

The AH flight model is generally considered one of the best. A lot less engine management than IL. It’s free to play offline so download it and give it a shot.

I think the AH3 VR works better then the IL2 one as you can use it with hat switch natively.

Also AH3 has integrated voice comms which is something I really wish IL2 had.

I have to disagree on this one. Obvious different people will have different opinions on some things.

While I believe the AH3 flight model is decent there are some things that to me feel a bit gamey. The spin modeling is a bit weird and I don't get the sensation of "flying" as much as in IL2. That said, depending on the settings you are using in IL2, they can be very close.

IMHO, IL-2 is more demanding, both in kites and ground crawlers. In AH one does not need to watch engine temps and manually operate oil and water coolers. Practically, engine cooks only when damaged. Also, how kites react for controls, is easier in AH. My strafing attempts here in IL-2 have mostly ended on trees, same with low level dogfights. Also missing icons here make it hard to to distinguish friend from foe.

I've been mostly tanking in here in IL-2 and find it really exiting. There should be a reward called "get killed in every ground vehicle". I'd be carrying several of those medals.

It is a subscription to play online after your two week trial but the game itself is free and full offline always. You don’t buy specific planes like the other sims today, they are all there to enjoy. There are dozens of terrains and planes/vehicles.

Someone said your name

was familiar in AW. You should join the forum and say hello, I bet you will find some old friends lol.

Bomber fights can still happen. Not long ago I was flying a set of Lancasters and didn’t notice the set of B17’s sneaking up under me. We tussled a few rounds but both ended up going our separate ways. Lucky for me the Lanc model has .50 calibers in the tail. Was lots of fun lol.

Hows the offline singleplayer content? Always wanted to give it a go byt I've never been thrilled at the idea of a subscription

There are some offline missions that you can fly that are decent and from what I understand there's a mission builder where players can create their own content.

I remember AH fondly, a lot of time logged back in the days :) The scenarios and events were the best experiences as a lot of pilots took part in them. Servers were packed and ping/playability very good even for EU players like me. Used to fly with name DB603 years back. Good to see AH is still alive :)

There isn’t a single player campaign or anything like that but there are single player missions with AI enemies and you can also create your own.

Definitely alive and somewhat well. Although development is no longer really happening it is still the best bang for your buck in wwii sims for me. There are usually about 120-130 players logged in during USA prime time. Had over 160 this weekend.

You should pop in the forum and say hello you might be surprised who is still around! Here is the forum thread for the Scenario.
