Lot's of really great skins being uploaded and it warms the cockles of my heart to see it. :)

Though in all my research I have never seen a two tone early (pre mid 1943) camo I.A.R.80 with the light blue tail underside.  There is a lot of confusion created by virtue of the fact that some of these early airframes were rebuilt, upgraded and repainted at the factory.  So you will see an early serial I.A.R.80 being given a new cannon armament, renamed to from I.A.R.80-A to I.A.R.80-M and given a new lick of paint, but it keeps its original serial (or tail number) throughout its service history.  So if you see a conflicting set of images with two aircraft sporting the same serial (tail number) and different armament, it is almost certainly the same aircraft with upgrades and a new camo scheme.

The typical camo schemes you will find are

  1. Two tone dark earth and dark green over sky blue.  This was the pre axis RAF style camo and was applied at the factory until mid-1943 up to aircraft serial 300.
  2. Olive Green over Sky Blue with olive green wrap around on the tail underside.  This was an uncommon scheme used from mid-1943 and was occasionally applied to early aircraft brought back for overhaul.  It was not used on new builds (as far as can be ascertained).
  3. Olive Green over Light Blue Grey (or RLM76) and was applied from mid-1943 starting on new build aircraft from serial 301.  This was also the far more common scheme used for early aircraft returned for overhaul from mid-1943.

It is possible to see the two tone dark earth and dark green camo until Romania changed sides in 1944.  After this period the camo outlined in point 3 above would have been used with pro Allied markings.

Yep. the painting "standard' of the Romanian airforce was as "Standard" as the "standard" parts they used.?

They started the war with British paint and roundels, then switched to a hundred types of crosses, then they used whatever they could get their hands on.

But overall your post explains the general rule. :salute:

Nice to finally have some Allied Romanian-skins in the game. I believe there aren't that many, other than the IAR's posted here, a Stuka and a Fw-190. Interesting part of history imo. Not only was Romania limited by the use of outdated aircraft, but they were relegated to the worst, muddy airfields by the Soviets who despised them. Heck, the last aerial kills by Romania during WW2, on May 4th 1945, was a Soviet Yak who attacked a pair of Romanian 109's (friendly fire was often intentional). Here is a little film I found of a post-august 1944 Romanian Airfield. I remember seeing more, but I can't find it.

Spoiler

Anyways, sorry for going off-topic. Great work lads =D

Hell yeah! There is no bigger legend than julian! Sidenote, I remember reading a story about a Romanian Hs-129 pilot shooting down one of it's wingmen as they were trying to defect to the germans. Defection was a big problem during the "allied" phase.

Hey, I'm about to release my career skins mod for the eastern front careers, did the groups that we have in career mode have any particular unit-wide or recurring insignia I can use to make generic skins? Or better yet, anyone want to submit a skin? The groups covered are Grp. 6 BoPi ARR, Grp. 8 Vânătoare ARR in Stalingrad, and Grp. 3 Vânătoare ARR and Grp. 4 Vânătoare ARR in Kuban.

Is there a template for alpha layers on IAR-80B? It is not in the official template.

Could be an interesting idea although making non-uniform camouflage on the wings of the IAR would be a huge pain with how the template is set up.

I took inspiration from your post and made one. It will probably be released within the next days. I'll make a post in the "IAR-80/81 Non-Historical Skins" thread when I'm ready.
(I used to dislike the early war French camo schemes. Now I love them 😁)
