WitchyWoman Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 (edited) So I used to fly this a lot with active fronts, moving soldiers etc. The must have mods for me now as a base is the AI Improved 1.4 by VonS and his DM tweaks which rid the game of the terrible issue that plagued the stock game. So as far as graphics, tweaks or corrections mods what does everyone else suggest and in what order to get the best out of ROF these days? Theres a ton in the ROF compendium pack and I feel like a lot of them overlapping are probably redundant. Edited December 19, 2023 by WitchyWoman
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I remember lethality mod (stronger wings), better hit boxes mod and improved gunnery enabled in realism options. Those make ROF close to current FC state.
VonS Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 @All, brief public service announcement for this thread - if running my AI/DM mods. for RoF, don't run the old Criquet & Gavagai AI (also their DM mod, the "reduced lethality" mod) at the same time - since it may lead to oddities in RoF. The Criquet & Gavagai tweaks were done sometime around 2013 or 2014 (for whatever version of RoF was available then). My AI/DM mods. packages were tweaked in the last update of RoF (United) - I think the last patch for RoF came out around 2021 or so, some minor server synchronization patch, or whatnot, but I don't remember the details now. And yes, do select "improved gunnery" in your RoF installs if running my DM mod. - if not running any DM mods., best is to leave the improved gunnery option off (otherwise you are back to the flimsy wings problem of stock RoF). Cheers all, ? 1
WitchyWoman Posted December 21, 2023 Author Posted December 21, 2023 (edited) Thanks Husar, Von, I do see a mod that has your combined mod I think labeled 01_ROF AInDM_VonS_ver1.4 but there is also your 1.4 AI improved special edition mod and your DM tweaks mod labeled 1.0 which are both standalone mods. Is it better to use these or the combined one? I cannot tell if this combined one is the same as special edition 1.4. Edited December 21, 2023 by WitchyWoman
VonS Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 (edited) Hi Witchy, "01_ROF_AInDM_VonS_ver1.4" is the folder in which the AI and DM mods are located. The AI mod is standalone and there are two versions: "ROF_AI_Improved_ver1.4_SpecialEdition_VonS" and "ROF_AI_Improved_ver1.36_SituationalNew_VonS." The 1.4 version is slightly newer than 1.36. The other standalone mod located in "01_ROF_AInDM_VonS_ver1.4" is the DM mod - that one is in the folder called "ROF_DM_Tweaks_ver1.0_VonS." Full directory paths are as follows: 1.4 AI mod -- ROF_ConsolidatedModsNew_VonS/01_ROF_AInDM_VonS_ver1.4/ROF_AI_Improved_ver1.4_SpecialEdition_VonS 1.36 AI mod -- ROF_ConsolidatedModsNew_VonS/01_ROF_AInDM_VonS_ver1.4/ROF_AI_Improved_ver1.36_SituationalNew_VonS DM mod -- ROF_ConsolidatedModsNew_VonS/01_ROF_AInDM_VonS_ver1.4/ROF_DM_Tweaks_ver1.0_VonS Relevant folders to pop into JSGME - if loading mods in RoF through JSGME - are the folders located after the last forward slash (e.g., "ROF_AI_Improved_ver1.4_SpecialEdition_VonS," etc.; also, for those reading these posts - don't load AI mods 1.4 and 1.36 simultaneously, either one or the other). Happy flying, ? Edited December 24, 2023 by VonS Fixed typos.
Ort_Hog Posted December 24, 2023 Posted December 24, 2023 What does 'Improved Gunnery' do? I noticed your injunction to turn it on for your mod. I've had it turned off in the basic game as I wasn't clear what it did. I guessed since it was with the realism options that perhaps it was some kind of aim assist and therefore ought to be off!

No aim assistance . Just less bullets spread. Without it's like shotgun, with on more - like machine gun as should be. Similar to FC default. You can be more precise if you aim well. Without you spray and pray. Edited December 24, 2023 by 1PL-Husar-1Esk
Ort_Hog Posted December 24, 2023 Posted December 24, 2023 Ah! Thank you. Why is it an option to make the bullets go in a wildly different direction from where the gun is pointing? I have read that Fonck apparently took five rounds per downed aeroplane, which would hardly be possible with this option off... I guess I'll be turning it on!

I have read that Fonck apparently took five rounds per downed aeroplane, which would hardly be possible with this option off... I guess I'll be turning it on! To make a (very) long story short, there was a years-long running debate about bullet dispersion in RoF, which eventually resulted in the devs offering the "improved gunnery" option which makes your machine guns fire a much tighter pattern than they do with stock RoF. However, while that did indeed improve the gunnery pattern in one respect, when used in conjunction with the stock DM in RoF it results in being able to saw off wings of the enemy aircraft with distressing ease and frequency. After much testing, I concluded (as did many others) that the best combination was either (a) turn off Improved Gunnery and use stock DM, or (b) turn on Improved Gunnery and use Gavagai's "Reduced Lethality" mod or some similar mod that tweaks the DM so as to make it tougher to saw off the wings. Personally, I favor the latter approach, at least for my single player experience.
Ort_Hog Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 I'm back after a New Year holiday, and trying to get some mods together in JSGME. It's loading up and I've had some fun in a PWCG early campaign with Morane-Saulniers and a lovely Bleriot skin, but can't find the 'improved gunnery' option. I notice it's there in a quick mission or scenario along with other settings, but when loading straight from PWCG (using VonS's Damage Model and improved AI 1.4) there's no setting available. Is there a global option to turn it on or off, or a config file?

J2_Steve Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 When you select improved gunnery in the quick mission settings menu, it stays for all flights including PWCG. So once settings are selected in quick missions or the career, the setting sticks for PWCG.
