Voxman Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Sadly my Reverb G2 gave up ghost after only four months of use. I bought it through a Amazon reseller, and grant it I should have been more cautious, especially where the price was very good, it didn't last long. Nevertheless, Amazon came through, after speaking to several support personnel and their supervisors, and finally getting a full refund. Anyway, I'm hooked with flying in VR and saddened as well as this technology is a bit difficult to work properly without some serious non plug and play work. With the G2 I followed some very excellent procedures that a few of the fine folk here on this forum posted over the years and got the system to fly at a very good performance, albeit I had to upgrade my vid card...so there was another expense. I had to turn down settings on the G2 and fly at 60 hz for smooth gameplay, especially on maps with heavy action on them. I fly SP, and mostly career missions. I'm now wanting to buy a new headset, and my budget is pointing at the Varjo 3 unit, especially since it is at a lower price...obviously old tech moves on. Also my computer system may end up being a bottleneck, so before I go down deep into this rabbit hole, I want to make a very informed purchase. That's where the G2 was almost a no-brainer. In any case, I have a simple question with regards to the Varjo, and that' the need for a base station. Can one use just a single base station? If so, how do you recommend setting/mounting it? Any other VR headset recommendations at this price point are welcomed as well. I don't use Steam for IL2, and basically this is the only simulation game I use...may give DCS a spin in the future.
354thFG_Drewm3i-VR Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 You have to use two base stations to get good tracking. Also what are your pc specs?

Are you sure you dont want to try G2 again? I have it for more than 2 years now, daily use and had to change only the cable once. Generaly i dont think that G2 users have many complains except the need for cable changing after some time of usage. Whats the cost of varjo plus two base stations compaired to G2 cost? 1

The V2 cable is also really reliable. I haven't had any issues in over two years of use.

Sadly it was not an issue with a cable. It was a new revision cable on the unit, but what happened was the display would not light up, the little HP indicator light did not work, etc. I contacted HP when this unit started to go bad, and they could not support it. The reseller had sold me a unit that was already three years out of warranty, which the reseller indicated as "new". BS. So I took action and filed a claim...which as we speak was accepted and I was fully reimbursed for it. The unit is in the hands of the reseller anyway. This was the case where I bit on the price of the G2 and I got a melon, and with that I wasn't going to fully invest more money on a not so "new" unit. Anyway, after spending most of yesterday reading reviews, especially reading reactions of former G2 users as a guide, and the price being half of what it was, I bought the Varjo 3. One base station was on sale on Amazon, so I bought that as well. 14 hours ago, =DW=_drewm3i-VR said: You have to use two base stations to get good tracking. Going to really struggle with all those pixels in VR because of the CPU and lack of ram in Il-2 VR. Your GPU is good though. Can you swing an upgrade to a 7800 X3D and DDR5? You would see a massive boost in CPU frame time performance. Really need 32 GB of fast, low latency ram these days. 64 GB would be even better. Edited December 13, 2023 by =DW=_drewm3i-VR 1

I should have added...and I'm not entirely locked into it, but I've been an Intel user for...well...forever, on the CPU end. I've switched back and forth on the GPU end of things, but I know VR tends to work better with Nvidia. With that in mind, I'm willing to swing over to AMD, with the 7800X3D, but within a certain budget. Other than life's continuing pinching of the pocket, I do have other "expensive" hobbies, such as cycling and also a guitarist. My guitar and bike buying is very tame and controlled, so I tend to stay with a product a long time. I know the computer world changes every 3 years..to stay on a good playing level, and probably ten years ago or longer I was flipping through computers at good rate. One thing I've noticed on my builds over the years is that Mobos can be crucial, and getting stuck with the wrong one can be quite easy to do. I have no knowledge of what AMD mobos are sufficient to play this game. Any recommendations? I usually stick to about a $200 price point, at least with Intel, and I don't need frills...like WiFi on board. I tend to like my main desktop with cable internet. As far as Memory, probably around $150 is my max price point. I'm not into competitive computer building. Just a machine that will play this game at acceptable FPS, obviously with some tweaking. Anyway, any comments or tips are always welcomed. I haven't flown for over a couple of months, and I do miss the routine and fun of the game.

Going to save on money and get equal/better performance with the AMD 7800 X3D! Unless you're building a workstation, there is no point of going Intel these days even though Intel is also back to making good products. Re: MOBO, I have a B-550M with my 5800 X3D and it works fine. People also seem to like the X670 for max performance. Just get one with good reviews from Asus, Gigabyte, or similar and you should be good to go. Whatever you get, it needs to support DDR5 and the AM-5 socket. Edited December 15, 2023 by =DW=_drewm3i-VR 1
Voxman Posted December 20, 2023 Author Posted December 20, 2023 Varjo Aero was received today, and I'm just gobsmacked on the visual quality compared to the G2. I'm not getting any younger, neither is my eyesight, but the quality of the visuals...well, its a worthy upgrade. I've been flying around in SP mode, with just one opponent. Haven't really spent too much time tweaking, but one thing I cannot get to work is XRNSnecksaver. Not sure if it's an issue with SteamVR, which I guess I have to use as I'm using a VIVE base station, btw one base station works fine. Anyway, I'm open to any suggestions on how I can get necksaver working again.
Voxman Posted December 21, 2023 Author Posted December 21, 2023 A little bit more tweaking today. XRNNeckSafer is working!! Thank you PatrickS! Got OPENXR toolkit to work and had to reset the whole menu to purge settings I had with Reverb G2. Had a career mission, on the Rhineland map, that has been active for a few years and tried to see how my frames held up with multiple A/C. The computer humming along worked flawlessly. A few small hiccups, but I'm really satisfied with the performance. Once I get a little more comfortable with the Varjo and scour a few settings, I'll run the performance benchmark. Definitely will upgrade my system sometime in the coming year...but for now, I'm pretty happy with the setup. Not sure if I'll ever jump into MP, as I did many years ago, and I know it's a better environment, but time available is somewhat limited. 1
