MP options

Hi,

 

I used to post here a lot back in the "old", original IL-2 days and had an association with 'battle-fields.com' (which sadly appears to be defunct now), but that was a long time ago now and I've not wound anyone up for a looong time ? Also, I've not really played since after CoD came out. I did buy BoS when it came out but didn't gel with it (no FW190 available).

 

I've recently installed BoS again since I obtained a better graphics card and I got my head tracker set up.

Are there any "intermediate level" MP servers for people, such as me, who just have IL-2 BoS without any of the later releases (they still seem pretty pricey)?

Do any MP servers exist for the original IL-2 (1946) or CoD and what patch levels might be expected/what is used to connect since I've the impression that Hyperlobby is defunct.

Common don't be leasy, go to multiplayer  join the servers, look at  mission date - BOS plane-set is early war, choose an airfield, see if BOS planes are available. Short answer - Wing of Liberty there you have.

Really? Get that attitude out of here as it's not going to get you very far. Anyway, I'll bite.

 

For dynamic online warfare, there's Finnish Virtual Pilots (airquake + tanks), Combat Box Apollo as well as some scripted missions that run from time to time (more serious), Tactical Air War (most serious), and then some other lesser options. Of those, CB with SRS can't be beat, not even by TAW IMO.

 

For quick fun/practice, there's Berloga Duel and Dogfight. Wings of Liberty has seen better days...don't really recommend anymore, but maybe for East Front for a beginner, you would appreciate it. For WWI, check out Flugpark. For WWII strategic bombing, there's The Cold Blue. Tons of options. Your best bets are FVP and WoL.

Last time I tried MP, there were no servers listed for some reason but this time (like, after Husar's reply) it worked. I wasn't sure if I would even be able to get into the server without the correct "pack" purchased but this seemed to be allowed, as Husar said. If nothing else, I could spectate or be a fairly useless gunner.

 

I did actually manage to get flying online in some dogfight server, some beginner's server "a day in stalingrad", I think it was, which was more of a co-op server against AI, which was fun and a good lead-in because it allowed external views etc and it wasn't long before it was just like the old days (although I haven't got a 190 so the 109 with gun pods had to suffice).

 

I also managed to get into what I'd call (in the old original Il-2 days) a "full real" PvP with some Volga scenario and train station/fish factory objectives. I don't remember the name of the server, unfortunately, and it was quite hard without voice comms, but I soon got into the swing of things and it was fun, despite not managing to shoot anything down.

 

I'd really like to play co-op missions, since this is what I used to prefer, but these all seemed to be passworded.

 

I think I'd be hopeless at the strategic bombing since I've not managed to get a Ju87 or He111 very far off the ground so I'll maybe stick to flying a fighter in the short term and try to pick these up if I maintain interest.

 

I will check out those options you suggest, though. I guess I just need to, if they rotate maps, wait until something pops up that I can actually participate in.

 

I suppose I have some other, non-MP questions. Has the FM and damage model changed since about 2015, which was the last time I tried this? It seemed that I could pump some Russian planes with 15-20 20mm shells and they just happily flew on whereas a few decent hits in the right place would shear a wing off or send them down before. The Il-2s are especially tough and even the oil cooler seems invincible.

 

It also seems much "easier" to fly than it used to (Ju87 and He111 excepted) as I don't remember the fighter stalls etc being so benign.
