AndyJWest Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Up to this point I was doing quite well. ? This is Dirt 4. I've not played racing games much for some years, and I'm rather rusty. Could do with something new though. Dirt 5 seems to have had some mixed reviews, and I'm wondering whether I should buy that, or get Dirt Rally 2.0 instead? I'm definitely a 'casual' racing simmer these days, as neither my reaction time nor my eyesight are as good as they used to be. That's my excuse anyway, and I'm sticking to it... 1
AndyJWest Posted December 8, 2023 Author Posted December 8, 2023 (edited) I've just realised that I missed the new EA SPORTS WRC sim (from the same developers) when talking about newer versions of Dirt. Has anyone tried that yet? Any comments? Edited December 8, 2023 by AndyJWest
Robli Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 I really like Dirt Rally 2.0, so would recommend that. While it is more of a sim than Dirt 4 or 5, I don't find it too complicated or anything. Great fun. Have not tried EA SPORTS WRC, but it seems very good. I understand it has more possibilities to tune between arcade and simulation settings to fit preferences. It has longer stages than Dirt Rally, fully based on real life stages, which is good if you are into realism, but for a casual racer could also be a bigger challenge.

Looking at reviews further, it seems that the new EA SPORTS WRC is rather buggy. Which leaves me in a bit of a quandary, in that Steam is currently offering a bundle of both WRC and Rally 2.0 for the same prices as WRC on its own. Which may or may not be a bargain, since I haven't figured out whether I need more than the basic Rally 2.0 to get the best out of that - the 'game of the year edition' seems to include more or less everything, but is a lot more expensive. Maybe I should wait for the next Steam sale, which probably won't be long.
Mtnbiker1998 Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 I played the heck out of Dirt 4 when I was in the military and away from my sim rig. Great fun on a Gamepad and the randomly generated tracks were a fun gimmick, limited as it may have been. Probably my favorite casual simcade racer. I quite liked Dirt Rally 2 (although I rarely go through the effort to setup my racing rig these days) EA WRC seems like it will be a pretty solid game eventually but I'd hold back until it gets some patches and goes on sale for cheap. The Rallysimfans mod for Richard Burns Rally is also pretty good if you're lookikg to mix it up. Imo it leans a little too far into the "harder is more realistic" category, plus its an old game and has its share of jank but you can download it for free and it runs on just about anything, so I'd say at least give it a try!
