Monksilver Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 (edited) From the Metro newspaper here in the UK "A fighter plane that took part in a daring raid on Italy just days before the allies invaded has been found more than 80 years after its pilot vanished. Warren Singer, a US airman, disappeared with his P-38 Lightning on August 25, 1943, during an attack on airfields near Foggia, Italy." The article even had the photo below to help the editor understand what type of plane the article was about. So how the hell did they give the article the following title!!!! "Missing US WWII fighter jet is finally found after 80 years" Edited December 1, 2023 by Monksilver 5
AndyJWest Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 (edited) Metro is a tabloid, given away free. You get what you pay for. Edit: And paying for a newspaper is no guarantee of much either - see e.g. this old story from, you guessed it, the Daily Mail, Britain's best answer to the question 'what would newspapers look like if they only printed stuff they made up'. Tornado missed glider by just 100ft thanks to lightning reflexes of fighter pilot According to the Daily Mail, the obvious reaction of an RAF tornado pilot bimbling along at 250 ft altitude and 500 mph when coming across a glider on his flightpath is to push the stick forward, so he's "forced into an inverted loop and speeds away upside down." I will leave working out the G forces involved in performing the alleged manoeuvre an exercise for the reader. Edited December 1, 2023 by AndyJWest 1
ROTER_BART Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 How uneducated? Look up Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect. "The Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect is a psychological phenomenon that highlights people's tendency to recognize the unreliability of media when it comes to topics they're familiar with, while still trusting the media for information on other topics." 1
Gambit21 Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Umm...if you think that's the biggest problem with modern journalism then I don't now what to tell you. I wish I lived in a world where calling a P-38 a jet in a publication was all that I had to be concerned with. 1 4
ST_Catchov Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 (edited) I like going to the tabloids for stories about real people and their journeys through life. No fabrication. Just honest journalism. And the chance of a pearl necklace for some lucky lady. Edited December 2, 2023 by LukeFF nsfw content
[CPT]milopugdog Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Sometimes I think stories or posts like this are made with intentional errors to have people correct them. It's an easy sort of way to get engagement out of the crowd that needs to vocalize corrections. You see it all the time on Facebook... "No name starts and ends with an A", and the comments are filled with people proving them wrong. But, it isn't the contents of the content that matters, just the engagement.
453=Whittle Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Just how uneducated are modern journalists? Yeah, it's a bit shit. There are plenty of people paid to talk about or even manage things they have little knowledge of. 8 hours ago, ROTER_BART said: How uneducated? Look up Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect. "The Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect is a psychological phenomenon that highlights people's tendency to recognize the unreliability of media when it comes to topics they're familiar with, while still trusting the media for information on other topics." That's a good one. I stopped listening to any generic "news" years ago, and have found in-depth articles written by people who care about and have experience in a specific topic much more useful. It also helps to have friends who can give the back-story to some things that end up misrepresented and incompetently reported in the media.
Zooropa_Fly Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Mainstream now simply relays messages, regarding anything remotely important. At that level 'journalism' is long dead. And it's greatest sin is what it doesn't tell us. As far as uneducated goes, you should see the state of the Scottish tabloids. Every single day there's spelling and grammatical mistakes all over the place. Extra words.. missing words.. Even in the headlines ! And as for the content.. 'trash' almost under-states it.

Lusekofte Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 The 4 years before that was terrifying and entertaining at the same time. but next year and onwards it will be far worse.

Where have you been for the last decade. There's no journalism left. It's al a pay to play a lying fest. Edited December 2, 2023 by Jaws2002 1 1

The last 3 years should have taught everyone that. It would be great if the last few years had taught everyone what a bunch of pap we're fed. Unfortunately, most of the general public still seems to believe some of it. Want an example, just look at how Trump is still supported. My current belief is that most of the current media is just deliberate "noise", filled with so much rubbish that most people either struggle to tell truth from lies, or just switch off altogether. The implications being that the people pulling the strings can pump out incredibly simplified messages (e.g. be angry about immigration) when in reality, it's just not a big deal. Certainly far less so than how much we're being stiffed by the ultra rich, who are still being allowed to hoard their cash in tax havens, meaning the rest of us are footing the bill for running our countries. Don't get me wrong, immigration DOES cost countries money, however, it's probably in the millions. Tax havens and similar are costing us billions, i.e. massive orders of magnitude more. 2
