Emergency engine power usage

Hi,

I understand all the planes have a time limit on wep but my question is if the time limit is say 1 minute, could i use it for 40 seconds then rest the engine and use it again for 40 seconds a few minutes later? The question goes for all planes.

I know technochat helps with this but I'm trying to use as few in games aids as possible.

I think the rule of thumb  is something like 1min limit means a 1min 'recharge' time, 15min limit means 15min 'recharge' time and so on. I believe this applies whether you use the whole time limit or not. I could be wrong though.... it happens a lot ?

It's Russian roulette. I know there is a method to the madness, but I would err on the side of caution.

Depending on the plane/engine you are using you can cheat (quite a lot of) extra time on WEP boost time if you decrease your rpms

eg. Spitfire XI 18lbs/2800rpm -> ~10min (~20min with 2600rpm)

La-5fn 1200mm/2400rpm -> ~20min

Bf 109-G14 1.7ata/2600rpm -> ~20min

though reducing rpms at high/all out boost should be a big no no and much more harmfull to your engine than running WEP past the described manual time.

Yeah, I try not to let it get close to the full limit as I invariably end up cooking it lil

With a plane like the P-40, I wouldn't trust any setting that goes more than a % or two past the safety markings on the Manifold and RPM dials on the dashboard.

For something like a P-51, I have no problem with going full throttle and RPM for 10 seconds here, 20 seconds there, just to get a little extra over the top of a loop or to get that extra few miles-per-hour to stay above stall speed when I've gotten a bit too slow.  I'm not sure if it decreases the overall 15 minutes of combat power time faster than only sticking to combat power but, "resting" the engine in max continuous mode does slowly replenish the timer for both combat and emergency mode.

I would say that overall, it is possible to use short doses of E-power here and there but, it depends on the plane.  For most of them however, I wouldn't rapidly go on-off-on again as that's probably damaging to the engine.  Whatever you do, make sure to operate the throttle smoothly and not too fast when rolling it up or in some cases, bringing it back down.

For the longer ones (over 15 minutes), this is close to true, but not the case for the shorter ones.  The best way to find out is to do a test in single player.  I've found that German planes with a 1 minute emergency timer will take right about 6 minutes to fully recharge.  The Me262 and Amado jets 15 minute timers take about 21-22 minutes to fully recharge.
