VPC VFX F14 grip Z axis help

I spent the entire day trying to figure out why the Z axis is acting like a button instead of an axis. According to the software (after calibration) each side of the axis corresponds to a button 13 & 15. However in the tester of the software it show a graph and as I slowly twist the grip it reads linear as an axis should react. What am I missing here? Please help.
