Morning guys, I'm running a 5600x, with a RTX 3080 and am thinking of upgrading.

 

Now the question is, is it worth going up to an RTX 4080 and keeping the same CPU? Or is it better to upgrade the CPU? I predominantly use a Quest 2, but am thinking of getting an a Varjo Aero, or a higher end VR set, but didnt want to get one if my PC wont keep up!

Hi. I upgraded from a 3070 to 4080 and this was quite a big step on a HP Reverb G2 ( habe a QuestPro now, but GC change was with a Reverb )

However my CPU is a i5-13600K with a single thread performance rating 20% above your Ryzen ( IL2 is single thread dominated, afaik (?))

So, I think .... in the end you will probably upgrade both, sooner or later.

As upgrade order I'd choose 4080 first, CPU later on then.

Ah interesting, i mean i did think maybe upgrading my CPU to a 7800X3D might be the way to go, to get some more performance in VR, not sure if that's the correct way to go though!

Agree with the above if you have the coin upgrade the video card but then you will be limited by the CPU

Cheapest upgrade would be slapping in a Ryzen 5800X3D processor and keep the rest as it is now. Will provide more than enough performance without VR and good even with VR.

 

If going Aero there is no upper limit what you can upgrade or preferably need.
