Operation Spring Awakening

Operation Spring Awakening (Operation "Frühlingserwachen") was a large-scale German military offensive launched during World War II. It took place in March 1945, primarily in the Lake Balaton region of Hungary. The operation was commanded by German Field Marshal Maximilian von Weichs and was the last major German offensive on the Eastern Front.

The main objectives of Operation Spring Awakening were to recapture the valuable Hungarian oilfields and relieve the besieged city of Budapest, which had been under siege by Soviet forces since late 1944. The German Sixth SS Panzer Army, composed of experienced and battle-hardened units, spearheaded the offensive. However, the Germans faced formidable challenges. The Soviet Red Army, under the command of Marshal Rodion Malinovsky, had gained overwhelming numerical superiority and had pushed deep into Hungarian and Austrian territory in previous offensives. This gave them a significant advantage in terms of resources, manpower, and strategic positioning. The battle was characterized by intense combat, with both sides employing tanks, artillery, infantry, and air support. The Germans, equipped with tanks like the Panther and Tiger II, engaged the Soviet forces, who fielded tanks such as the T-34-85. Despite initial gains and some tactical successes, the Germans struggled to sustain their momentum. The harsh winter weather, logistical difficulties, and a lack of fuel hampered their efforts. Additionally, the Soviets launched powerful counteroffensives, putting immense pressure on the German forces.

The failure of Operation Spring Awakening was a significant operation that showed the declining power of the German military and the inevitable victory of the Allies. It marked the beginning of the Soviet advance into Austria and Czechoslovakia, ultimately leading to the capture of Berlin and the end of World War II in Europe.

Armour

Based on Tank Crew – Clash at Prokhorovka, TC2 will consist of ten tanks and four collector vehicles (two tanks & two AA/SPAAs)

Allies

  • T-34/85
  • M4A2(76)W Sherman
  • SU-76M
  • SU-100
  • IS-2

  • Not sure... (Collector)
  • ZSU M17 MGMC (SPAA Collector)

(Don't know if the IS-2 took part in the battle, couldn't find any information.)

Axis

  • Panzer IV Ausf. J
  • Panther Ausf. G
  • Tiger II
  • Jagdpanzer 38(t) 'Hetzer'
  • Jagdpanzer IV

  • Jagdpanther (Collector)
  • Flakpanzer IV "Wirbelwind" (SPAA Collector)

Tanks apart of the Clash of Prokhorovka module could also be included in Spring Awakening such as the StuG III and Tiger I.

Regarding aircraft.. unfortunately, we have no late Soviet aircraft, HOWEVER, Yak-1bs, B-25s, A-20Bs, LA-5Fs, La-5FNs, and Po-2s all took part in the operation. If anything, 1C would have to create an AI iL-2m3.

The Germans (and Hungarians) could use the Bf 109 Gs and Fw 190Fs.

A TC2 will be great but with the campaign pack of Tiger this sim is really great in SP. My only regret is the shaky view of VR gunsight during zoom... but it seems a very old problem that will never be solved...

Just a dream. The developers have recently admitted that a Tank Crew sequel with the current engine is unlikely due to unresolved business decisions with third party developer DigitalForms. Add to this the last week's announcement from a Combat Flight Sim competitor that his friends at DigitalForms are busy developing 2 aircraft carriers. All of this said, it will be a miracle if we see any new content for Tank Crew in this engine.

We're just hanging around waiting for the miracle ;)
