So when do you think Varjo's next glasses will come out?

Recommended Posts

I want to get the best VR glasses I can get and from what I read here and see on Youtube, Varjo fits the bill. However, cutting the price of the Aero by half makes me think that follow-up glasses are surely around the corner.

So, any educated guesses when (if?) it may come out? For Christmas? Any dependable news from the rumour mill?

There are no indications at all that they are close to releasing an Aero 2. Some folks believe they must be since they cut price of Aero in half.  I personally would be surprised if they had an Aero 2 design ready to go anytime soon.

I imagine that they have recouped all their initial investment and are now in a position to lower price to move some more headsets. And yes even today Aero is still King (IMHO) for a high quality VR headset.

If their statements during that stream in which I did not win a free Aero are anything to go by, there won't be a successor for at least some time. Whatever that means ?

I don't see much incentive for Varjo to bring out a new headset that would likely require a higher selling price than their current consumer offering. If I were to buy an Aero and find it to be free of defects I don't think I would lose any sleep over a possible new Varjo iteration. The Aero quad view DFR works in DCS and the PimaxMagic4All DFR works at least to some extent for the Aero with Il-2 BoX. If the GB team would take interest in why that Pimax app doesn't work reliably with Il-2 their efforts could certainly be of benefit for VR users who don't have a 4090 ?

Well, I have a 4090. Does Aero work well for Il-2, DCS, MSFS with that?

Using an Aero for DCS with eye tracked DFR is an absolute incredible experience. I run with most settings maxed out with very good results. This is with a 4090 and an i9 9900k at 5.2 GHz on all cores.

I agree. These headsets that utilize DFR are absolutely great to use in DCS as well as other sims. The good thing about DFR is that its actually most beneficial for people that have mid/lower range video cards, as your able maximize the full potential of the card in the area your actually looking in the headset..

Yes to all.

I was hesitating over buying a Crystal, then when the Aero price drop hit I pivoted to Varjo. Don't regret it. 90fps seems to be easier to achieve with the Aero than the Crystal using the same settings (on a 4090, given that DFR in Il2 seems to be problematic).

The DFR app is problematic in IL-2 GB, sometimes running flawlessly, other times crashing shortly after starting a mission. When DFR is working tho it keeps FPS closer to 90 than without. This with Aero on a 3090Ti and without significant artifacting. For MP, campaigns or career use the crashes are a "no go" of course. For quick missions though it's definitely useable.

But can't I just turn off DFR in il-2GB and it will work fine without it? Or will it work only quite badly?

Thanks for all the info guys!

Ah, you bought it very recently then. Did it arrive fast? And you needed some ground stations too, right?

Fortunately you don't really need DFR in Il2 with a 4090. So yes, just turn it off. Game still looks great.

My Aero was delivered to the UK about a week from placing the order. I bought one base station as I'm only going to use the HMD for seated, sim-VR and one is all you need for that.

Ah,that's a relief to hear, because I am becoming quite enamoured with the Aero, after all I've read. I'd want it for Il-2, MSFS and DCS, in that order. Maybe a bit of Cliffs of Dover, but I don't know if they got VR to work.

One base station only, ok, cool. Which brand is best?

Asked a Finnish colleague today if he could find any rumours on Finnish-language web sites about an eventual follow-up to the Aero, but zilch...

If you can find one, Index 2.0 base station from Steam. They get them in stock off and on so good to keep checking.

Won't you risk losing tracking when facing away from the Lighthouse (e.g. while checking six)? I mean, I did read of users using only one station but they were not really into dogfights.

Money happily not really an issue. I'll get two.

Do I need anything else, apart from the Aero VR glasses? Controllers? (I already have my Virpil Alpha Prime and SharKa-50 control panel set up more or less OK. And I don't really have hands for more stuff!)

And the Index 2.0 base station works "out of the box" with the Varjo Aero, or it takes a complicated set-up? Do I need to run Steam for the Index base stations to work?

Sorry for so many questions!

You do not need controllers unless you decide to play some made for VR games.

Yes base stations work out of box. You will need to mount them , one in front at about 10-11 oclock to your left, one behind at about 4 oclock. I have mine around 12-14 ft apart. I mounted mine on tripods. Have not touched them since and that was quite some time ago.

Ask away all you want.

I will basically just use the Aero for flightsimming, but I am wondering what other mindblowing content is out there. Movies, games, documentaries...? Just to show off the glasses to friends and family. Any suggestions? Something that knocked your socks off the first time you saw it in VR?

My last VR experience dates all the way back to the first Oculus Rift Developer Kit. Fantastic first experience, but severely limited resolution-wise, which was evident even back then. This was my report from back then, 10 years ago, we've come a long way, I think!  :

Half Life Alyx. Best made for VR game I have ever seen. I think I have played through it off and on like 4 times already.

Received this message from Varjo support - "Our developers have found a bug in the latest NVIDIA driver family that affects Varjo users that have RTX 40-series GPU (mainly we have gotten reports from people using 4090). The bug can present itself in various ways, most often with different types of connection issues.

The issue should be gone if you downgrade driver to 532.03 or before. You can confirm if this is the case with you too by testing out that driver."

Interesting,  running latest driver here without any apparent issue.

OK, my Valve Index base stations arrived. now just waiting for the Aero glasses....

I'm going scuba diving next week in Malta and it got me thinking, are there any cameras out there for recording binocular 360 degree video? So, a movie sphere of 360 degrees, and with two cameras capturing footage, one for each eye. And can such video be played back in VR glasses? That would be the best way to really "be there", playing the video in the VR glasses and allowing the viewer to look around with binocular vision.

Should be possible, right? Or is there some technical hiccup I haven't thought about? ?

Maybe the "freely looking around"-part cannot be done because two cameras cannot record binocular video in all directions at once... Or can they?  ?   Hehe, just daydreaming...

You will have two screens displaying on your monitor by default. Obviously there is a way to change that based on videos that get posted by reviewers, but I do not know how they do it.

Have fun scuba diving!

Got to say I do not not understand anything of what you wrote except the last sentence!  ?

Visited Queen Juliane airport on the Caribbean in my first VR outing and just sat and laughed all the way through the flight. Then hit the Faeroe Islands and Copenhagen, which were both super-gorgeous as well. Flying the Pilatus over the Faeroe Islands was especially cool, with that beautiful workmanlike cockpit. How lucky was I that the Scandinavia update came in right before I did those flights?

New York City and Paris were also incredible. The sense of speed flying low over the rooftops is quite something. Also, landings are dead-easy now, with "3D surround" vision.

Amazed at the clarity and resolution of the Aero. Some technical quibbles but I am sure I will get those sorted out later on.

So, it seems I need a pair of controllers to set-up the base stations properly... Or is there a work-around? Hadn't really counted (or budgeted) on that, and I don't really need them either, but perhaps the kids will have fun with them.

Should I just get the hand controllers that Valve make? https://store.steampowered.com/app/1059550/Valve_Index_Controllers/

Or are there better (and compatible) ones out there?

When I replaced my Index with an Aero I placed the Aero's power brick into the same power strip receptacle the Index's PS had occupied. I have 4 base stations and made no adjustments to their placement. I did not uninstall/reinstall any software other than setting up Varjo's. So far as I can recall I didn't access my Index controllers during the process or since. Il-2 BoX ran without incident. I did not reposition any of the base stations for BoX or for DCS. I don't have MSFS.

You don't need controllers to setup you base stations.  Have you set them up so one's number one (default) and the second base station is number 2+ ?  Configure your stations in standing/siting mode and not for room scale mode.

Thanks, very helpful!

Have been having some weird issue these last two days. I start my Varjo Base programme, put on my Aero glasses, and then have the virtual desktop in front of me. Start up "IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles" and then.... Steam VR starts and nothing else happens. Frustratingly, my mouse only appears inside a tiny little window of the Steam VR app. I can't get out of the window (except by ctrl-alt-del and closing Steam VR, which also closes Il2.) So, I can't get Il-2 to play in VR at all.

Only started yesterday, don't know what I can do. Anyone have an idea?

Oh yes, and a big S! to dburne and thanks for all the help lately! Had I known his medical situation I wouldn't have bothered him with my questions...

BTw, MSFS starts with no issue and works well in VR. Steam VR doesn't vcome up at all when I play it.
