Night fighters over Eurooe

It is stunning how the one of the important air battles in European skies and all of its planes were neglected in almost all flight simulation. A dedicated night figthing with Lancasters,Stirlings,NF Mosquitoes,Ju-88 C and G's,He-219,P-61 and many more were almost never created and I don't know the reason.

I suspect therr are several reasons.

1) It hasn't been done before and thus investors don't know how well it would sell (a similar situation happened with WWII in Eastern Europe - it wasn't until a Russian dev made Il-2 that it was taken seriously).

2) A lot of people mistakenly assume slower larger aircraft would be less fun to fight in, especially at night. Honestly though, there was a mod for SWOTL that proved to me how dramatic and fun it could be.

3) Most of the intensive nightfighting was Commonwealth vs. Germany. As a result, few Americans or Russians grew up hearing stories or reading about it. This means less interest from American or Russian developers, and a potentially smaller market.

4) It requires a ground control system, and at least one airborne radar... which requires quite a bit of research and coding (even if the player never interacts with the radar directly, and is only directed by the operator, it still is a new system to develop).

P.S. I'll probably move this topic somewhere else in a bit, as such a mod isn't possible at the current time.

That's not true!

In fact, as I've hinted at in a couple of other threads, I've already got a working "proof of concept" for 1942-1945-ish airborne radar, with plans for a 1941-1943-ish ground control. If there's people who really like to see it for themselves, I suppose I could share it, with the remark that it would be limited to one very simple mission, and that because of a current bug you'll have to restart the sim after running the test mission (the game won't crash, but there will be "unintended side effects" if you fly any mission afterwards).

Oh, and naturally we haven't really got the right aircraft; we'd need four-engined British planes as well as the triple-crewed version of the Bf-110.* Neither of which I can solve, obviously.

And yes, I want to finish this "project" at some time, but I've got two (three?) "projects" I need to finish first. Don't expect any news on this front for at least a couple of months.

* The 88 almost exclusively did long-range nightfighting for which we don't really have proper maps, and the He-219 was a rather rare aircraft even at the final stages of the war.

Bat Il-2 1946 has an awesome totally working radar system for the BF110, JU88 and others, even has the Radio operator station. So yes its totally been done already and very well I might add. Maybe something similar can be done for BOS
