A request for a small visual tweak - Engine flames

Can they be visible when an aircraft is flown by an Ai pilot.... WITHOUT complex engine management switched on?

 

It's a great visual effect but the Ai aircraft don't show it and if the player switches complex engine management off or sets their aircraft to Autopilot, the effect vanishes. 

 

Can it just be set to always on? Please? 

 

I mean... they look awesome!

The flame effects seem to be very dynamic and change in relation to various engine parameters. This is a complete guess on my part but I assume the physics get simplified when complex management is off or AI is in control. In those cases the specific parameters normally used to determine the type of flame are no longer present. So it might not be as simple as 'flipping a switch' to make them always visible.

 

If this is the case, then I assume TFS thought it wasn't worth their limited time to make it work under these other circumstances. Completely new protocols would need to be created just for the purpose of determining which flame type to display at various engine settings during these other modes. This probably wouldn't be a trivial amount of work but I can't imagine it would be all that difficult. Besides, I don't think all that much accuracy is needed nor expected in these other modes. I'd much rather have the flames still visible in these modes than not have them at all, even if they wouldn't change color or intensity nearly as precisely.

 

Of course I could be completely wrong here. This is just a guess on how this works. It's just that if it really is as simple as 'activating' flame during these modes, then I can't see a good reason why TFS wouldn't have already done this by now.

If the flame was based on RPM for the Ai, then hopefully it would be a very simple tweak?

Engine flames visible. Colour changes per RPM

 

(no I realise that isn't code, and an over simplification but Ai won't care about visible flames. The colours and visibility are a visual trigger not an Ai trigger?

We will certainly look at this when our coders have some free time away from the Visual Update and VR work.  ?
