Team Fusion Buzzsaw Posted September 22, 2023 Team Fusion Posted September 22, 2023 There actually will be an additional version of the Typhoon. The Mk IA originally had the Napier Sabre I engine when it was first introduced in September 1941... which had a lower Full Throttle Height and different horsepower figures. By the end of October, most of these early engines were replaced with the Napier Sabre II. So there will be a Typhoon Mk IA and Mk IA-Late. The Typhoon Mk IB had the Napier Sabre II from the start. 5
Team Fusion Buzzsaw Posted September 22, 2023 Team Fusion Posted September 22, 2023 Spitfire Mk IX is the IXA early version with the Merlin 61... not the later types which had Merlin 63's, 66's, 266, (Packard Merlin) different tail structures, rudder, elevator, canopy, etc. 1
9./JG52_J-HAT Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 Not wanting to sound pedantic, but we won't get a P-51A. It's the Mustang Mk I and Mk IA, their first RAF versions. The P-51A came after that. The proper designations also for the announcement should be NA-83 and NA-91. Or call them Mustang Mk I and Mustang Mk IA / P-51 (no letter for the USAAF).

"NA" stands for North American.... which is now owned by someone else. 1

LLv34_Flanker Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 S! Pilots did learn to appreciate the increased performance of the G-2 after initial adjusting to the new type was done. Some of course wanted a F-4 like turning capability, but G-2 in general was an improvement. Finnish pilots appreciated the G-2 a lot as it brought fighting to a new level against increasing numbers of VVS newer planes.

Many years ago, with other flight sims, I never wanted to fly the G2, for me it simply was the too heavy plane, only same armament as F4, and the it was the plane with Marseille crashed after the engine failed. But in BoS I tried out the G2 and I found out: -it is only 100kg heavier than a F4 -the aerodynmacs / air resistance is still better as the G4 and the later Gs (ca. 10...15km/h) -and if you compare the performance data in Great Battles with the G4, G6 I would say it has with ca. 656km/h at 7000m a real good speed, and this speed for 30minutes with the derated engine. -because of this the G2 is my favorite early G Model. While the G-2 didn't handle quite as nimbly as the F-4, it did have a better climb and performance at higher altitudes... even the early version with lower boost. No I mean the engine thing. No full throttle allowed until the bugs were worked out. A G2 is was kill Hans-Joachim Marseille. I get killed by bullets just fine "Along with bearing difficulties, the DB 605 suffered particularly badly from the materials shortages in wartime Germany. From the outbreak of war onwards critical shortages of elements such as nickel and cobalt meant that the DB 605 had its exhaust valves reduced in nickel content from about 13.5% to 8%. This resulted in their becoming insufficiently corrosion resistant, and they began to scale in use. This scale then caused pre-ignition, which led to catastrophic detonation and eventually engine failure. This was the primary reason that the full 1.42 ata manifold pressure was not permitted, although the problems occurred for a long time before the official order restricting the power level was given (Jumo and BMW suffered exactly the same problem for some time). This was eventually fixed by applying a very heavy chrome plating to the exhaust valves, which rendered them just sufficiently resistant to scaling while still using less of a critical element than the original nickel alloy. BMW had developed this plating technique first, as the BMW 801 in the Fw 190 had also been suffering from a spate of detonation induced engine failures.[2]" Edited November 24, 2024 by II./JG27_Rich added because have more info 1
II./JG27_Rich Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 I think they had the problems worked out when the G4 came out
LLv34_Flanker Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 S! They had issues with bearings not getting enough lubrication due a too small oil pump causing cavitation. A bigger pump among other tweaks resolved this issue. Some sources say that DB6XX series were hampered by the order from "you know who" to not use certain critical metals in the engine manufacturing. This caused problems as engine was designed with these metals being used thus: Shorter life span, increased maintenance etc. Also if Junkers and Daimler Benz would have shared stuff the DB6XX could have been much better. For example bearings were better done in Jumo engines etc. 1

So I came out with asking someone who still is doing service on these engines. I don't know how it is in other countries, but in Germany any workshop around aviation has to be licensed by the German LBA (Luftfahrt Bundesamt), the German federal aviation administration. So there are not many workshops for DB 605 maintanance. One I found on the web is Moto Bende. So I wrote the owner an email asking for information around the DB 605 lifetime. I got a reply the same evening. I try to translate it here: Quote: ...the DB605 was designed for a lifetime of 250h. Partly overhaul, in the meaning of overhauling the cylinder banks, every 100h. Today cylinder banks are revised after 70 h. That sounds not much, but today these engines are mostly not flown more than 20-25 h per year. Problems with the 605 in WWII were because of sabotage, messy work and because of untrained personal. Partly overhauling was only done in bigger licensed factories and general overhaul only in the factories of the producer (DB)." So that was what Dirk Bende told me and to be taken as fact. II./JG27_Rich Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 Yes I agree about the life span. Unless you're in modern times out of the hurly burly of war time conditions and bullets flying this way and that way your 109 Spitfire Hurricane or what ever it is is going to get beat up one way or another. 1
