RX 7900 XT and Il2 and a link to some VR tips from the AMD community

Got the card today and up and running.  It was a little weird to start with after using Nvidia for the last few years.  With some basic VR tips from the AMD Community

https://community.amd.com/t5/drivers-software/7900-gpus-quick-vr-tips/td-p/599507/jump-to/first-unread-message

the card is running like a champ.  Clarity and colour seems better than the old RTX 2080 as well.

As for card tweaks, bumped up the power limit 15%, Set the fan to 50%, dropped the voltage down to 1030, selected fast timing for the memory and that's it.  I did try bumping the memory up 200hz but that blew the hotspot temp out to 108degrees as opposed to 80degrees when running memory just with Fast Timing and no Advanced Control Frequency changes.

Now having a blast with the 8K-X

Pimax settings 1.25 Render with SteamVR at 100% and Open VR-FSR at 77%.

Large FOV in Pimax setup, 35% sweet spot and 20% sharpening in FSR settings.  Il2 on High graphics setting and frames nice and steady at 72 to 75

Suppose I better go and change my sig. ?

Will get onto that over the coming weekend.

Pulling down the testing files.  Will test without OpenVR-FSR.  At the moment I am still exploring the card settings.  Strange that Pimax Home and Steam Home stress the f out of the card even though not much is happening but with Il2 VR it is sitting at around 90% utilisation and much better running temps on GPU and HotSpot.  Other interesting observation is that Il2 will crash on launch if Full Screen is selected in startup.  Has to be used in VR in Windowed mode. ?

Ok, test results

Not sure if it is a CPU thing or GPU and I will add some QMB generated missions  at 80% SteamVR render quality as per the test instructions for Pimax 8K-X

first is a baseline 1080p 2D run

Then VR 40%

VR 80%

Then some QMB mission generations with intercept missions first map Stalingrad, followed by Normandy

Result is interesting for the test mission but in game QMB or career or scripted campaigns - results are much better.

I think I will try Full FOV on the headset with SteamVR at 100%, Pimax setting 1 and with OpenVR-FSR at 80% and see how that goes.

I am still very impressed with the GPU and am not sure what the test mission is stressing as the results are not the same in game.

GPU-Z info

Forgot that in the previous post

Motherboard:     Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro WIFI
CPU:                   Ryzen 9 3900X
CPU Freq:          4.4 Ghz
Cores:                12
RAM size:          32Ghz (2x16Gb)
RAM Freq:         3200 Mhz
NB Freq:            1600 Mhz
RAM timings:    15-15-15-35
GPU:                  AMD RX 7900 XT

GPU Temp        56 degrees

Hotspot Temp   61 degrees

Flew with test settings a beach patrol over Normandy and when near the beach, frames tanked by half.  Away from the beach and they were back up to full speed.  CPU utilisation around 54%.  Tested with clouds set to high and no difference to the frames.  Don't think GPU is holding this thing back.

Swap in a 5800 X3D and you'll see all your CPU issues go away!

I was thinking of putting one in my machine, but wasn't sure it would be much of a jump from my current Ryzen 7 3700X. I don't use VR and have a RX 6650 XT.

It would be a massive improvement. Basically linear from Ryzen 3700x => 5800X => 5800X3D. The 5800X3D is pretty close to the 7800X3D, much closer to the 7800X3D actually than your cpu to a 5800X.

What is nice besides better performance in games vs top Intel i9 is the price of 7800X3D as  half price of the former.
