Introduction - couple questions as I start

Hi all.  I am really hoping to dive back into flight/combat sims.  I used to do some OLD stuff like Falcon, F-15 (?), and Their Finest Hour - going way back.  Going to start with IL-2 but also want to get into some DCS jets.  I've done a few test flights in IL2 with my TM hotas X (yeesh) and it was cool.  Finally shot down an AI plane... took every round/shell I had.... I blame the controls and lack of fine-tuning ??.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Racing Sims and have a good 8020 simrig that I want to now add-on HOTAS gear.  Going to be tricky to figure out exactly which pieces/mounts/extensions, etc. to make it all work.  But I did come across Monster Tech and they seem to have thought of a lot.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions... but the first ones are just about acquiring gear.  I can afford to buy new, but since I don't know exactly what I want, I thought maybe better to buy pre-owned.  Is that feasible?  What the best source, eBay?  Is there a buy/sell section on this Forum (I haven't seen one)?

Honestly, I don't know what will be best... VKB looks like a great option, but maybe just go budget with T16000m setup at first.

Appreciate any input and look forward to being in the air soon.

This is probably a good option to start. If you like flight sims enough to stick with it after that, then you can piece together other pieces as you can. Not sure where you live, but I was able to find a few things at good prices used locally through craigslist, but only rarely do they appear.

Get a cheap form of headtracking kit, and you will be set.

Yeah, I've got trackir5 already. Spent some time setting up, still need to fine tune.

On this topic... while I'm in IL2, I cannot alt-tab back to TIR. It's like tir goes deep into background once I get into the sim.  Btw, I am running via steam.  Would that matter?  I don't even recall when and how I purchased il2...

I am not running in steam and have the same problem. One work around is to leave something else open that you can Alt tab to, my browser is what I leave open most often. Then I can get to tracker through the tool bar.

No problems here alt-tabbing to TrIR from the game, except when it or a map is loading up sometimes...

I lose cursor altogether once in a while and end up re-starting the computer (ever since I went Win 10), but that's another story !

In the settings have you ticked boxes 'minimise to system tray.. or the one below it ?

If so, try un-ticking them.

The effort is it all worth imho.

The Stick should be 60+€ the pedals(100-200€ ones) should be buyed cause the more earlier you learn to use them the better(or just get them later like me I used the stick all the time and now Iam unused to pedals).

TrackIr or a cheap face track solution ask the forum for help.

Maybe a throttle but I never needed one in 2ww era planes.

I liked the Bf109 e7 alot and the fw190s, now Iam in DCS piloting a F86 a far more complex system than the 2ww era planes.

DCS and Il2 both are cool sims.

Il2 is a good sim to start with the flight model is like in DCS(imho) and it has not this system depth that DCS offers(a plane is a complex system!)

Compare the p51 from Il2 to DCS. (But DCS has simple and complex plane systems to offer like the Su-25 which is a "simple" reduced one(still much more complex than to Il2 where you just have to press "E" to fire the machine up)(Ill use Il2 for 2ww and DCS for all that is 1947+) (how I said I think both sims are cool the ww2 stuff in DCS has it right to exist.)

Il2 offers also much more 2ww stuff than DCS. But DCS offers alot after 1945+. Youll find out yourself later.

In Il2 you can start shooting at the first day. (It needs alot of practice but ones your get used to it your in for a kill(lets hope the other pilot can jump out and use the parachute cause thats the tragedy of war( (WAR what is it good for?) )

if your into fighting and planes youll have alot of fun (a lot of time is wasted by flying from point A to B but thats it)

enjoy
