SidtheGit Posted September 17, 2023 Posted September 17, 2023 (edited) Hi I am looking forward very much to flying the Waco glider that is scheduled for release. Would the devs be able to look at the maps and ensure that the areas used for glider LZs, not just those historically used by the Waco, are suitable for glider landings please? Areas I am suggesting are 1. Eban Emael - south of Maastricht, a Belgian fort that was attacked from the air by German gliders (German DFS 230 assault gliders were used, I would use the Waco as a stand in) 2. The landing areas east of Benouville that were used for the assaults on the Caen canal and Orne river bridges on D Day (Horsa gliders were used but I would use the Waco as a stand in) 3. The Merville battery area north east of Caen attacked on D Day (Horsas were used but same as above) 4. Areas on the Contentin Peninsula used on D Day 5. The LZs used by the British and American gliders during Operation 'Market Garden' 6. The area around Wesel that was used for Operation 'Varsity' If the intention is there from the devs I am happy to provide more information as to the exact locations, I am starting the process with this suggestion. You can land anywhere you like on the map, and I regularly do so with the FC aircraft. It's a bit bumpier/muddier than on an airfield, but I'm sure that's something the real-life glider pilots had to deal with as well.

The thing with having the flyable, and landable, glider is that I don't want to be able to just land anywhere I like on a map, I want to land in specific places. An example of this is the Caen Canal bridge ie. 'Pegasus' bridge, located on the Normandy map. https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/article/lightning-assault-on-pegasus-bridge/ The attached pictures show the 'Pegasus' glider landing zone, one from 'IL2 1946', the other taken from the current map in GBS. The '46' map was usable to land gliders on because the landing zone was clear of trees, 4 'DangerDogz' managed to fly the G11 glider (modded to make it flyable) to the LZ and land successfully on this occasion. The GBS map won't be usable because of the trees, highlighted in yellow. These would prevent gliders from landing, perhaps possible if the ones furthest from the bridge were left in place but definitely not possible with those closest to the bridge in place. What I am suggesting is that the examples I listed in the OP are made suitable to land in by being clear of obstacles and as historically correct geographically/topographically as possible. Juri_JS Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 I think SidtheGit is right, the landing zones will need some rework to make historical glider missions possible. Of course we will also need some additional objects to populate the landing zones, like static versions of different glider types. To make glider landings more challenging I would also add obstacles like telephone/telegraph poles, fences, haystacks and "Rommel's asparagus". 1
