What: Saturday Squadron Fly-in

Where: Knights of the Sky Campaign server

When: Saturday August 12th, 6 PM GMT (20:00 CEST)

Info:

Today we announce the first Squadron Flyout during Alpha 1 of the No.10/J18 Knights of the Sky campaign. Everyone is welcome to join of course and we would like to have as many people as possible to be there to properly stress test the server. With probably lots of high alt action with recons, arty spotter, attacking frontlines, infantry/ tank contact patrols and much more! This event will be returning every Saturday and it would be nice to have some battles with multiple squadrons and lone wolves there. Keep in mind that we’re entering a very early testing phase of the base mission now and we’ll try to improve things as soon as possible and get it to run smoothly according to player feedback before we get a full campaign running. Also check the stats site afterwards to see you personal score and awards! Everything about the campaign is explained in the campaign manual listed in the links below.

See you in the skies!

Many thanks Ivo.  Also, would it be possible to have a fair bit of cloud cover on the server in future, rather than just blue sky.  More cloud may bring the opposing sides together more and create variety and more opportunity for mission planning and tactics.

Thank you for your consideration.

Happy landings,

Talisman

Thanks Talisman, the weather is totally ransomised though including the cloud type and altitude, wind speed and direction, turbulence and starting time. So one day it can be nearly clear, the other day it can be cloudy and turbulent. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

What: Saturday Squadron Fly-in

Where: Knights of the Sky Campaign server

When: Saturday September 2nd, 6 PM GMT (20:00 CEST)

Info:

Lately, strategies have come into place in the Knights of the Sky server, pilots begin to understand and know the server well, fights seem to become harder and more energetic... how will your faction fare? Every pilot can make the wheel of fortune spin in one direction or another, be the hero in this battle!
Also make sure to read the latest campaign change log, a new time chat function has been added lately ("!ti" in the chat) to be able to see the time left in a mission in real time; some changes to the victory conditions as well as a teaser on our new upcoming, never done before recon system.

See you in the skies!

Great turn around again last Saturday, epic furballs and great formations!
Stats from last Saturday: http://no10j18.duckdns.org:8000/en/mission/537/

Important: Temporary event schedule changes
For the next four Saturday's we'll temporarily run our Saturday Squadron Fly-in on Friday, starting this week. This is because of Jasta 5's Black September campaign will run for those Saturdays and we don't want to have 2 big events on the same day, and of course more events means more fun! Feel free to join the server before of after Black September though if you want to warm up or can't participate.
From October 7th on we'll run this event on Saturday again.

Alpha 2
I'm also pleased to tell you that I've got my server manager script (with the AI planes, welcome messages and time commands for now) working very stable now, also after the AI planes have been re-activated. This means we're getting closer to an Alpha 2 release which will bring our new chat photo recon system, various other campaign additions and *perhaps* another new, never been done surprising feature as well ?
The first iterations of the fully moving frontline/airfields/objectives will possibly be implemented in Alpha 3 already.
So stay tuned for all of this and as always, see you in the skies!

So looking forward to flying this evening on this server in the trusty Sopwith Camel with squad mates, only to find that there was no Sopwith Camel available on the map.  I found this very strange considering all the other contemporary aircraft types available on both sides.  Never mind, I left and went and watched TV instead.

Was I blind and missed the Camel or was it an oversight not to provide the Camel or intentional not to provide the Camel?

Happy landings,

Talisman

Hi Talisman, we currently have 4 planesets on the server: mid 1917, late 1917, mid 1918 and late 1918.

The planeset for today was mid 1917, so that's our only planeset without the Camel, the other 3 all have the Camel. All the planes in each planeset can be found in this document: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17MiKxSsFFk_352YxRZfgQOWcsf1nEUNgtKYWp9pMc6k/edit?usp=drivesdk

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you Ivo.  However, it seemed odd to me that the DRI was in the plane set last night, especially given this information regarding the DRI:

The two aircraft were sent to Jastas 10 and 11 for combat evaluation, arriving at Markebeeke, Belgium on 28 August 1917.

Richthofen first flew 102/17 on 1 September 1917 and shot down two enemy aircraft in the next two days. He reported to the Kogenluft (Kommandierender General der Luftstreitkräfte) that the F.I was superior to the Sopwith Triplane.[11] Richthofen recommended that fighter squadrons be reequipped with the new aircraft as soon as possible.[11] The combat evaluation came to an abrupt conclusion when Oberleutnant Kurt Wolff, Staffelführer of Jasta 11, was shot down in 102/17 on 15 September, and Leutnant Werner Voss, Staffelführer of Jasta 10, was killed in 103/17 on 23 September.

The remaining pre-production aircraft, designated Dr.I, were delivered to Jasta 11.[12] Idflieg issued a production order for 100 triplanes in September, followed by an order for 200 in November.[13]

Fokker Dr.I - Wikipedia

Compared to this source for the Camel:

In June 1917, the Sopwith Camel entered service with No. 4 Squadron of the Royal Naval Air Service, which was stationed near Dunkirk, France; this was the first squadron to operate the type.[19] Its first combat flight and reportedly its first victory claim were both made on 4 July 1917.[6] By the end of July, the Camel also equipped No. 3 and No. 9 Naval Squadrons; and it had become operational with No. 70 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps.[8] By February 1918, 13 squadrons had Camels as their primary equipment.[20]

Sopwith Camel - Wikipedia

Seems odd therefore that mid 1917 includes the DRI but not the Camel?

Thank you for your consideration.

P.S.  Some more info re the DRI here:

The first three production aircraft were designated Fok. F-I 101-103/17. F-I 103/17 was supplied to Werner Voss on August 28th, 1917, and F-I 102/17 was flown by Manfred von Richthofen Sept. 1st, 1917. Richthofen also flew 114/17, (crashed Oct. 30th 1917), 127/17, 141/17, 152/17, 477/17, and 425/17. The Fokker triplanes were given the military designation 'Dr.I'.

In late October 1917 Lieutenants Gontermann and Pastor were killed when their Dr.Is broke in the air, and the Dr.I was withdrawn from operations. The triplane was issued with modified wings in December 1917. The failures continued but, to a lesser extent. The Dr.I never recovered from this setback and was not supplied to many Jagdstaffeln.

Happy landings,

Thanks, I know about this already. There are only 5 Dr1s in that planeset though and they weren't seen much at all yesterday, when the Albatros D.III gets released I will remove the Dr1s from that planeset though.

Many people told me they would like a planeset without the Camel and the Dr1 in it to make the other 1917 planes shine and to give them a chance as well which gives really fun engagements I have to say. There are only 5 Dr1s as "experimental types" to fill up the gap till the Alby D.III gets released.

Thanks for explaining Ivo, but you can see how it appears to the average punter who just happens along and notes odd disparities.

So it looks like folks have said they would like no Camel or Dr1 on the map, and we get no Camel but still we do get some Dr1?  See what I mean?  You can see how it looks and feels to the average flyer who had been looking forward all week to Sat night only to be left scratching his/her head.

Happy landings,

I understand it, but I don't want Central to only have the Albatros DVa, DII and Pfalz DIIIa as fighters for the time being, against quite a lot of different Entente scouts. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Camel pilot as well but just want Central to have some choices as well for the time being.

And by the way, frequent updates and explanations are being given in our Discord server if you would like to join that.

Thanks for getting back to me Ivo and thank you too for a very good server and all the work you do in making it possible.  :salute:

Also, thank you for your invitation to Discord, but I am one of those folks who doesn't engage with Discord because of issues with the business model, security and safety.

Happy landings,
