I have a Virpil control panel coming this next week and was wondering: can keypresses like function keys (F1-F10) be mapped to the buttons, or would I need to use something like Joy2Key (which I'm already familiar with) for that?

Software will allow you to set your switches or buttons to pretty much any mode you want, highly customizable, but it comes already working for basic out of the box dx buttons.  You can play around and test with little concern, basically impossible to brick their hardware via the software, it has an automatic reset ability if you do pooch the software, back to base settings.  Be advised though, every time you do hard reset it, it'll be seen as a new device, your in game keybinds won't see it, until rebound.

You likely would need to use something like Joy2Key, Virpil software does not allow for mapping keypresses like VKB does. I myself have never really had that need for my Virpil gear I just map all the buttons I need in the game itself. I did the same with my VKB gear I had as well. Last time I mapped keypresses was way back when I ran TM products.

Of course if the game allows buttons to be mapped to commands that use specific function keys then yes can map that way. It would just need to be a button assignable in game.

Cool, thanks. Yes, I was thinking about the in-game radio commands, which are all internally coded to function keys. With my "old" button box I've just had the function keys mapped via Joy2Key, so it sounds like I'll have to do the same with the Virpil box.

That, or I can just map the most commonly-used radio commands directly to the buttons, since IL2 does have a list of those in the list of commands (Attack Nearest Air Target, etc).

Just don't exceed your 64 dx button limit. That's why I use TARGET for my HOTAS and Joy2key for the BlackHog button box. I'll use it for my Virpil CP#2 when I finally get everything set up and ergonomically good. Looking to pick up just the button box to the Thrustmaster TQS throttle system. That way I can use GUI with TARGET to get full functionality out of everything and not exceed the 64-button max. Looking to get an NLR FS set up this winter sometime.

I'm not messing with Joystick Gremlin, I find it more confusing than TARGET.... and TARGET GUI is easy.
