It was designed in response to an Army Air Force requirement for a fighter capable of 468 mph at 27,000 feet with a pressurized cockpit and armed with four 20mm cannons. The contract for one hundred P-62A fighters is cancelled as production would reduce the number of P-47 Thunderbolts Curtiss is building for Republic." 3
