My First Skin - Sir William "Panther" Lyons' SE5a

Stumbled across this old thread while looking for things to bring over here from the old RoF Forums, and decided I had to bring it over for its "historical significance".  This is where it all started (and the rest, as they say, was history :) )

Was doing a little research online and ran across some obscure references to the flying record of Sir William Lyons, whose nickname during the Great War was "Panther" (perhaps a play on his last name, or perhaps something he picked up while hunting the big cats when serving with the British Army in India before the war - the source materials were a little vague on this point). Although not one of the better known pilots of WWI, his SE5a did sport some unique refinements for the time, and it's easy to see in the shots below some of the influences which he subsequently brought to the automotive world when he became one of the founders of the Jaguar Motor Company a few years after the end of the war:

Thanks to all the real skinners here for the information and the inspiration needed for me to give this a try - obviously you have nothing to fear from my artistic skills, but if you see this baby on your six, WATCH OUT!  ?

Some further research uncovered a few differences in the placement of some of the insignia and numbers, so while I was correcting those I also made a few modifications to try to improve the general red color (which became known as Radiance Red when applied to later Jaguar automobiles) and the look of some of the chrome trim and burled walnut accents, as well as correcting the wheels to reflect the proper style. As with many other WWI pilots, Lyons' planes may have sported several slightly different variations over time, so the previous one may not have been technically incorrect, but the version below appears to be the definitive one according to my research so far:

Ok - just realized that this skin concept opens up a whole new world of potential customization - for example:

Usually I am a bit of a "purist" with skins… but looking at this all I could think was:

Who the hell puts bumper stickers on a Jag!?!? /forum/public/style_emoticons/phpbb/icon_lol.gif

LOL - I'd never do it IRL, but these two were just too appropriate to resist (I especially like the "reloading" one, given that this kite has the funky Lewis gun and all) - one of the nice things about a virtual world is that you can express yourself without actually messing up your ride /forum/public/style_emoticons/phpbb/icon_lol.gif
