Bombs and big holes......

Wouldn't bombs tear enormous holes in balloons even if they didn't detonate?

Or would they also detonate?

I would think the balloon surface would provide enough resistance to trigger the fuse, but if not surely they would make a big hole.  I'll have to try dropping a string of Coopers on a balloon and see what happens.

I have dropped many 20lb cooper bombs on German balloons on the Jasta 5 Flugpark multiplayer server. They detonate instantly on contact with the balloon, usually damaging my plane and injuring my pilot. It's a quick method to take out a balloon, but risky. I would only recommend it if you absolutely must destroy the balloon in one pass and will be disengaging immediately.

 

PS: I have also dropped bombs on Gothas on the Flugpark. Gothas are an excellent target for bombing because they are tricky to fly, and human pilots are often afraid to push them into evasive maneuvers. They are harder to hit than balloons, however.

I will retract that statement. Bombs DO work on balloons. My bad.
