I like IL-2 a lot, but I hate, loath, abhor, and urinate-on-after-eating-a-pound-of-asperagus our need to use Steam VR for the VR experience. I've had flares of hemorrhoids that I consider superior in entertainment value to SteamVR.

Case in point, I 'm flying around Normandy at 20K feet, when I look to my right and see ...

Guess ...

No, really, come on guess ...

A Bf.109 ready to caress me with hot lead?

A B-17 ready to put the smackdown mackdown on Carpiquette?

Hey, good guesses!  But wrong!

All wrong.

Oh, so very, very wrong.

No, I looked out of window at 20,000 feet to see the SteamVR "Bookcase" careening through the cloud next to me.  Ooooh, immersive!

Better still, I cannot get rid of the blasted thing.  I restarted IL-2, restarted Steam, restarted my computer, kicked the cat, twice, but there it is, everywhere, Bodenplatte, Normandy, Moscow, you name it ... the Steam Library Bookcase, my constant wingman during WW2.

Has anyone experienced this, and if so, how do you manage to make the godforsaken thing go away?

Thanks.

Did you try OpenXR? There’s a detailed post on how to make it work and I’ve gone with “per game” installation and works quite well. I don’t even have SteamVR installed any longer.

There should an option to turn off steam VR home and a lot of other settings. Maybe that would help.

If you don't need to use steam then use opencomposite. This bypasses steam VR.

As kissthesky says this will then allow you to use openxr toolkit as well. Very useful.

Depending on what headset you use you might have to do a "per game install" which is a bit more complex, but if you have Oculus then this should run fine with just opencomposite.

Looking now, thank you!

FWIW, I've had an an Oculus Rift S for 3 years, but just this week I got a HP Reverb G2, and I switched over to that.  So, I have two headsets, but I use the HP currently.  The resolution is quite a bit better.

Reverb G2 even by today's standards is still a good headset for flight sims.

So strange.  I found that using Steam to open IL-2 actually seemed to solve a lot of problems that I was having.  Maybe Steam has AI that can sense who likes it and who doesn't. ?

Steam VR and Steam Home are not the same thing.

Turn off Home in Steam VR options.
