Youtch Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I recently realized that under snowy conditions, the snow flakes shine way too much like they would be silver particles, and that under sunny conditions, the cockpit instruments shine like christmas trees. Any idea what is the graphic parameter(s) that might cause this effect? I don't remember this before, I believe something got messed up. I have to reduce the shimmering on city, set as per forum recommendation texture filtering LOD Biass (DX)= at -0.375. I don t know if it could be related. Many thanks in advance, y.

Aleksander55 Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 This might not be your case, but I'll leave this here for other people who might have problems with brightness settings: This is a tip to anyone who plugs their PC to a TV screen instead of a monitor: A TV screen's brightness might be too high for gaming, at least for simulator/milsim type games where resolution/spotting/range of engagement where you're hunting pixels matters. I use a 40" TV screen that allows for a maximum of 1920x1080. I borrowed a relative's 43" tv that allows for 4K resolution to see the difference in spotting and what my system could achieve in terms of resolution x performance. Besides not being able to play at 4K with good enough frame rate, and at 2560 ✕ 1440 I couldn't play at 60Hz, only 30, I also found that the normal brightness/backlight settings of this other TV were much higher than on mine. On winter maps I was pretty much completely blind. Even on non winter maps the bloom was ridiculous, against the sky and looking even slightly in the general direction of the sun I was completely blind. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I had to lower the brightness settings to almost close to zero to get about the same level of brightness of my TV at about 60/70%. Cycling trough the default image types didn't help, all of them were way too bright. I had to go in more detailed settings and lower the brightness/backlight. So, it turned out that the no name cheap TV I have has a panel very similar to typical PC monitors, while other more expensive ones might have these kind of way too bright panels/settings. I noticed that for watching movies, youtube videos, etc, this other 'way too bright' TV has much better image quality than mine, everything is much richer, much better viewing experience and probably for other kind of games it might be better too. So if you're having trouble with way too much bloom/HDR on IL-2 or other milsims and use a TV screen instead of a monitor it might be that the panel type and factory settings are way too bright for these types of games, not the games own settings.

I think nearly any time you change a GFX setting, that bloom auto reverts back to on (1) for some reason. This game has an abysmal bloom effect.
Youtch Posted July 11, 2023 Author Posted July 11, 2023 I was opening the startup.cfg while in the game to check the config. Besides i never touch the graphics setting through the interface, only touch the file directly as it tends to mess up everything as you very well said.
THERION Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Bloom is only related to HDR. If you turn on HDR, then Bloom is automatically activated. If you turn off HDR, Bloom might still be activated - this is a known issue and might still be the culprit. Did you synchronize your monitor. This is the first thing to do, before messing around with the graphic settings. Make sure your Gamma is correctly set. Try to set it manually in your startup.cfg to 0.6 or 0.7. 1

Sorry, but to me this wasn't clear. VR is a different story I think - too many 3rd party tools and things running in the background for VR if you ask me, not to mention all those tweaks and fiddling depending on the headset you are using. Maybe you will find some hints and tips in the VR section of the forum? Cheerio 2
MajorMagee Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Are you running any post process shaders like Reshade?

Not necessarily. IL2 runs out-of-the-box using SteamVR just fine, without any fiddling or 3rd party tools required. The issue *may* be related to whatever VR things the OP is using, but let's not assume that just because he flies in VR, the problem must be related to it Anyhow, @Youtch can you post a screenshot of the issue?
