Steam menu from my screenshot or IL2 menu?

Just click like normal, not sure what problem you're having with the menu?

Well, I meant in the VR environmet, VR helmet on,  Ican see the plane, but no mouse cursor, no Steam Controller  cursor, like that.. F2 or F3 , that is what I meant. How  to move in the menu , change the options, like that

Ahh yeah sims like IL2 don't use VR controller usually, it's just mouse & keyboard to control the menus and HOTAS for everything else.

If you can't see the mouse cursor it means the focus might be on another window, alt tab back into IL2 or click on the IL2 game window.

Not sure what F2 or F3 means, but do everything in the menu with the mouse. Once you start flying then it's HOTAS. No VR motion controllers.

Hi guys,

I am at a loss.  I have a 4090, latest i9 cpu and plenty of ram.  My new Pimax Crystal is only getting about 60 fps and the picture is not crip/sharp at all in IL-2.  I know that this is a software setting issue, as the Crystal and the remainder of my hardware should do far better.  I like to use XRNS, which does not work with SteamVR and only works with OpenComposite and the OpenXR toolkit.  Therefore, I want to bypass SteamVR if I can in order to still be able to use XRNS.  Can you guys please post pics of your settings for the following: IL-2 graphics settings, PIMAX settings and OpenXR toolkit settings?  The earlier part of this thread has lots of dizzying information and changes!  What settings do you guys now have for obtaining high frame rates and stable IL-2 game play?  Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Also 4090 here, but I have the 7800X3D (the AMD with the big 3D cache good for sims).

Don't bypass SteamVR, use VRNeckSafer instead of XRNeckSafer: https://gitlab.com/NobiWan/vrnecksafer and

(Just ensure you start SteamVR before opening it).

This is my settings for 90fps in IL2 SteamVR mode (if it's not a clear picture, it's probably because you have set render quality to "balanced" in pimaxplay which as the default is actually really low resolution):

TAIPAN: thanks for sharing.  Do you mind sharing a picture of you VRNecksafer settings?  I use XRnecksafer because it has both Yaw and pitch options...  Anyhow, I will test with the above settings now and get back to you.  Note: my render quality within Pimax software was customized to 1, similar to what you have.  Will get back to you with above settings and see what kind of a picture and fps I am getting.  Any changes within Nvidea control panel that you have made?

ok, so I have tried all of the suggested above settings, with "vanilla/stock" Nvidia control panel settings for IL-2 Sturmovik (with the exception of preferring max performance on power setting) and I still get 59-60 fps!  And that is with me going to your "balanced" settings for IL-2 in-game settings above.  What gives?  I have done all of the above settings and it still looks particularly terrible when I pass another plane in offline 1 vs 1 duels--there is this flickering/shimmering, almost stuttering in flight of the bogey as it passes me and when I track its six, as if I am not getting enough frames.  This effect gets compounded when I turn my head to follow the bogey, like when a bogey passes your 3 and 9 o'clock.... I am afraid to go online multiplayer servers with this, lol.  It has been a couple of days fooling around with the various settings and I honestly do not see the hype about this headset.  They only give you two weeks to return it, so I think that it will go back in its box and I will have to pass on a headset that is over $1K, yet it cannot achieve a reasonable frame rate with an up to date CPU/GPU and plenty of ram.  Note: I was always getting 90 fps for both the Reverb G2 and for Quest 3, so I gotta think that this is headset specific and that this has nothing to do with my hardware.  All in all, rather disappointing!

Do you play in window mode? If I do, I am also stuck at 60fps. Gioing to Fullscreen gives me 70-80 fps with same settings.

window mode?  Please clarify....

Is Il2 repeasted in a window or fullscreen on your monitor? Window view can limit VR frames to 60fps

when I play in VR, I have tried both full screen and split windows and have not noticed a difference in the fps.  I had full screen un-checked as TAIPAN suggested above in the IL-2 graphics settings.  That gave me 59 fps.  When I did check off the option for Full screen and re-tested, my fps was 60, so no change....  I assume that this is the "window mode" setting that you are talking about?

Yes, for me it makes a huge difference. Tested back and forth. FPS increase in Full Screen vs Window = 10-20fps  with a Crystal, 4090 and 13600k

With the help of a friend of mine (Hill--than you, brother!), I figured things out.... the reason why I was not getting higher frames and better imagery was because my Pimax XR Runtime tool resolution was too high!  That tool was supposed to read off the Pimax Device settings within the Pimax software.  I made adjustments and the resolution in the Pimax Runtime tool now reads 3224x3826@90Hz.  I also made changes within the Nvidia Control panel for IL-2 settings, as well as some changes to the graphics settings within IL-2 itself.  Now getting 90 fps consistently with much better game play.  I owe Hill a huge debt of gratitude! <Salute!>  And thanks to all who tried to help on this thread!

Yeah my post said "Don't bypass SteamVR" which means don't use OpenComposite.

PimaxXR resolution wouldn't matter if using SteamVR/OpenVR which is the native mode for IL2. Most of us didn't get much or any benefit from forcing it to switch over.

To switch back you either need to use the OpenComposite app, or restore the OpenVR dll ie just reverse whichever method you used.

If you do that, my settings will work.

FYI these are my nvidia settings:

Now I notice you said you prefer XRNecksafer because yaw and pitch settings - if XRNeckSafer is important, you'll have to stay on OpenComposite to switch over. Personally I didn't need the pitch change because the Crystal has such a great vertical FOV I can always see vertically just by tilting my head.

TAIPAN: thanks again for the valuable feedback.  For the time being, I will stick with OpenXr and OpenComposite, as I do want to use XRnecksafer over VRnecksafer.  For me now, I am consistently getting 90fps with good clarity.  Thanks again for the invaluable help!

Don't know if anyone else has tried this but a tip I found off another forum really helped reduce stuttering was selecting 'no scaling' for display settings in the NVIDIA control panel image.thumb.png.c01899ef3f4925a71166aca2abe1ff17.png

That's the output to the monitor not to the crystal.

I could imagine it might affect performance though based on the mirror image being displayed - is your IL2 set to Fullscreen ticked/ON?

Mine is windowed, and does not scale even though I have scaling turned on (gets used for other games). With scaling on there is no negative effect for me because my IL2 is windowed in a small 800x600 window.

Yes I select Fullscreen as I think this was posted somewhere in this thread (or maybe somewhere else), I didn't think it would make much difference but for me at least it massively improved performance by 20fps or so.

This is the problem with VR sometimes, the amount of tweaks and conflicting info. So much advice is to reduce the resolution of the mirror as much as possible, the opposite of using the full screen (mine is 3840x1600). But sounds like there's also advice to go full screen.

At the end of the day we just have to test and run our own, for me I find it better to keep it in a tiny window.
