Jettisoned shells on Fokker D.VII

Isn't that inside chute for the empty ammunition belt?  I believe both the MG08 and Vickers ejected out the bottom so if they were trying to conserve the brass it would have a chute below.  But, ejecting out the side doesn't appear accurate.

I do not know. If so, it seems strange to me that the ejection of the shells did not happen in the same way for the previous aircraft (e.g.: Fokker Dr.I).

From this video (starting from minute 2:00) it seems that the shells were ejected UNDER the breech. From here I can not imagine how they could be deflected laterally.
