I was a bit sceptical, but this actually looks really fun! I love that dinky turret.

Not that I am aware of.

Can't wait to do gunfights in Li-2's... What could be more fun than circling around, trying to get on each other's tail, and then with the added fun of the target shooting back from the turret! A Li-2 dogfight server will be very popular, I think!

Or the famous Axis vs Allies matchup... Li-2 vs Ju52 ?

Be interesting to see how it compares flight wise to the C-47 due to the turret & different engines that are fitted.

Well that's not fair for a start... the jerries have got an extra engine!

But no forward firing gun.  Kind of a Boulton Paul concept.

This is a must-read - even if you aren't into the Li-2 or U-2VS:

Interview with Olga Mikhaylovna Lisikova – Lend-Lease

I have been thinking about this. It'll be challenging to get a kill, but if one succeeds it'll be very satisfying. It could also be interesting against some of the Flying Circus aircraft :)

I suspect that'd require quite a bit of additional coding. It'd be interesting though.

I'm more curious what field modifications we get:

1) I'm hoping for a ShKAS option as well as a UB option for the dorsal turret. The ShKAS had more ammunition and could be used for deterring attacks, while the UB is more deadly - so it'd be neat if we get both.

2) There was an overload modification with reinforcements to the bomb racks to allow carrying the FAB-500. There was also an alternative bomb rack for eight FAB-100 bombs. Sideways firing door gunners were also common - so I'm wondering if we get any of these.

3) Cargo was often dropped from the side-bay doors (including sometimes without a parachute)... so I'm very interested in what cargo options we'll get.

Much less likely:

4) Small bombs or crates of bomblets were also dropped out of the side doors (I don't expect this, but it would be cool).

5) RS-82 rockets were mounted under the wings, and one aircraft was modified with two forward firing NS-45 45mm automatic cannons for attacking trains. I suspect that there may not be enough photographic evidence for either of these modifications - but it'd be pretty hilarious to hunt searchlights or trains with such weapons.

This plane will be a nice gimmick until wait flying circus 3.?

Seriously I am sure it will be an interesting plane. The gunners canopy must be amazing in VR

Hopefully it comes together with the FC3 release and the first new FC planes?

And let's not forget that the Li-2 was one of the most common Soviet night bombers. I will certainly add the Li-2 as AI aircraft to my "Night Fighters over the Kuban" campaign. Together with the DB-3/Il-4 the Li-2 was the bomber type most frequently encountered by Luftwaffe night fighters over the Strait of Kerch area.

It would be nice if some Li-2 night bomber units could be added to Kuban career mode. However, I am not sure where the units where based. It's possible that their bases were located outside the map area.

Look at the pictures real close, there is something sticking out back by the door!

In the screenshots doesn't look like a window is there, like in this model, but looks like the spot for side defensive weapons.

Yes, those are indeed ShKAS machine guns in those positions. ? The opening for them could also (according to this page) be opened and closed with a metal plate.

It is also slow enough to be caught by the Ju-88C6a... so it isn't quite a Ju-88C6b vs Wellingtons or Halifaxs, but it is at least something in that direction for the Ju-88C to hunt.

How about bomb aiming? What will it have, and what will be functional?

I notice the NKPB-7 is not yet present in any of the WIP screenshots, nor in Dev Blog #341. The U2-VS still doesn't have a working bombsight four and a half years after release -- I don't need another incomplete night bomber.

According to Borovik (the guy who wrote the book on Sturmoviks) the NKPB-4 and OPB-1 sights were also used... so we might be getting one of those...?

I don't own C-47. Wait for this at full price or get C-47 with some discount now?

If it outperforms Il-2's current best dogfighter, the 110, sign me up.  :)

"An armed transport aircraft with paratroopers and cargo inside - how much more versatile can you get?"

Bombs target.

"Oh look there is one survivor!"

Straffes target.

"oh no, you missed him! Look he is running to hide in that cave!"

Paradrops an infantry platoon.

"well ok we got'em now but our guys are going to get hungry out there"

Paradrops supplies.

That really depends on whether you want a C-47 or an Li-2...?

The C-47 is a nice civilian transport. The Li-2 is a transport with the ability to convert it into a night bomber.

P.S. I always found it interesting the the Lisunov Li-2 has weaker engines than the C-47, but the Soviets still managed to put guns and bombs on it!

So the LI-2 is one more plane to the impressive collection of planes in IL2, I and maybe everyone that plays IL2 hopes that World War 2 air combat is so vast that the catalog of planes possible shall never be full. And that in many, many years, we still shall have additions to this collection. Thanks! :salute:

Yes, I really like the fact that they are running out of ordinary aircraft (That have appeared in twenty or thirty past flight sims) and are getting to some of the more unusual ones... gives plenty of opportunities for new experiences.

Always look forward to these DD's. Great looking plane: necessity is the mother of invention. Extremely versatile aircraft.

Excellent addition to the eastern maps.

Thanks devs its very appreciated. Next will come the IAR. I would like to have it added in my Kuban missions.

Yes, lots to look forward to:

Lisunov Li-2 for all existing Eastern European maps

IAR-80/81 for Stalingrad and Kuban

I-153 for Moscow and Kuban (in 2024)

Ju-88C for Stalingrad and Kuban (already released in Battle of Normandy)

It is pretty amazing how a couple of aircraft can refresh an existing module!

Yep exactly. Hs 123 was used up until 1944. Would make a very good groundpounder for all three eastfront modules.
