Why does the top rear gunner in an A20 have throttle and mixture controls?

In the A20, the rear turret gunner has both throttle and mixture controls for both engines.  Why is this?  Why would he ever control either of these, especially when he doesn't have access to any of the other flight controls?

Take a look at the official manuals it also had rudder pedals and a stowable stick. For emergency use.
