This the video I started with:

Watch some tutorials on gimp if that's what you'll use as your editor. Most of it is learning the editor's nuances. Use your layers wisely. You'll need to find and install some fonts if you want proper stencil markings. Every skin you do you get a little better and a little more particular. You'll build a library of reference material as you go. One of the hardest things is figuring out the layout of the flattened skin. There is a wire frame layer that you should make visible to get your bearings. The most frustrating part of skinning is, to view your work in 3D you need to export your dds and then open it in the 3D viewer (which is in the game files). You will end up doing this countless times to make little adjustments or to line things up just right.

The alpha layer is very important. It is what determines the shine or transparency. There is a separate file for this in the link Rjel posted. It is especially important if you are trying to make shiny metal American planes.

I'll try to help if you have questions.

Thats a way to go for gimp quite similar to Photoshop which Im at right now. I would skin planes only I like as a beginner for dds file. Wish what comes out is met right but I saw one downloaded here with misplaced textures, the map is different in il '46.
