[DBS]Tx_Tip Posted June 22, 2023 Posted June 22, 2023 Engine sound inflight is a constant monotonous drone no matter the throttle setting changes without any pilot perceptiveness of acceleration. Is this correct for the engine type and proximity to the pilot? For instance with the Nieuport 28C.1 blips (pilot closer, different engine type) acceleration is not only known but contributes to the immersion and pilot performance. Tip

Tip I don't know any liquid fuel engine which sounds do not change if rev up.

Yet here we can quickly throttle up from 10% to 80% with no real discernable auditory difference for the Sopwith Dolphin and the SPAD, both with V-8 Hispano-Suiza 8Bb engines of 200hp and 220hp respectively. Resulting with an auditory dead zone for this engine type. SPAD Sound Trk.zip Tip 1
=IRFC=kotori87 Posted June 26, 2023 Posted June 26, 2023 Odd that you call out the N28 as having a better engine sound, because it is well known the in-game N28's engine sound is ONLY controlled by your throttle setting, and has no relation to actual RPM. Compare how engine noise changes when you adjust mixture and monitor RPM, then compare when you change throttle setting. It is distressingly easy to over-rev the engine during combat against skilled human players because audible cues that other rotary engines have (engine sound related to actual RPM) is not true with the N28. Every SPAD I have flown changes sounds with engine RPM, not throttle. There isn't a huge difference in sound between 1500RPM and 1600RPM, but I can hear the difference between a SPAD in a high-speed dive, an over-revving engine in a high-speed dive, and normal SPAD cruising. 1
[DBS]Tx_Tip Posted June 26, 2023 Author Posted June 26, 2023 Right. Perhaps the V-8 Hispano-Suiza engine sound design within the game is what needs to be reviewed, redone and/or augmented. Adding the V-8 Hispano-Suiza 8Aa 150hp and V-8 Hispano-Suiza 8Bb 180hp as having with no real discernable auditory difference along with the V-8 Hispano-Suiza 8Bb engines of 200hp and 220hp respectively. All resulting with an auditory dead zone and no pilot perceptiveness of acceleration for these engine types. Tip
