Question about armored glass effectiveness

My question is what size and type ordnance could armored glass stop?    Different aircraft had different thickness and windscreen angle so please specify which one you are discussing.  The amount of deflection and range of of a shot would also play into this.  There must be test data under controlled circumstances to eliminate the variables.  My assumption is generally it might stop smaller MG rounds but I really have no basis for this.  What about .50 caliber?  Could any cannon rounds by stopped?

Please, this is NOT a thread about the appearance of the 190 windscreen.  If people go there I hope admins lock it and throw away the key.

Well as Otto Kittel could tell you, it doesn't stop a 12.7mm round from an IL-2 rear gunner.

Probably a topic for the history/aviation board.

Not that effective at all. I've been killed plenty of times by bullets coming through the windscreen during head on attacks. Franz Stigler had a dented skull from a B-17 gunners 50 cal that came through the glass but it slowed it enough to prevent it from killing him.

I'm sure I've seen a photo of the armoured windscreen of a Beaufighter that stopped a 20 mm cannon round.

However, I suspect it wasn't an AP round, probably just ball and of course, we don't know the range.  The projectile may have been almost spent when it hit the glass for all we know.

The range the round is fired from has a huge impact on the penetration it achieves.

As previously stated the kinetic energy is GREATLY impacted by the range. That being said the armored glass should be quite effective for 7.62 ammunition and also protecting the pilot from shrapnel and other debris.

IIRC the Russians tested the 109G armored glass (60 mm thick), and it could stop a 12,7mm round from 400m and a 7,62mm round down to 100m. So it was certainly not 100% bulletproof... and the 60mm thick glass was on the thick side as far as Panzerglas went on airplanes, others even had less.
