dpf4052dpf4052 Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 I understand that I have to buy this title in order to buy the later "Battle of Normandy", which is what I really want. I always fly in VR. The Steam site says the Stalingrad title supports vr, but that you don't need a vr headset. Please explain. I don't understand how you could fly real vr without a headset because you would be missing the true stereoscopic effect that defines vr. If I can't fly the Stalingrad title in real vr, I guess that I"m not interested, because I can't see buying a title that I really won't fly that much for $50 in order to get the title I want for another $50.
DD_Crash Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 You have to but Stalingrad IF you use Steam. Just buy it from the Il-2 website. If you fly in VR you DO need a VR headset but the game works fine on a flatscreen
Skycat1969 Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 (edited) The series is a traditional air combat sim originally made for just flat monitor. VR support was added as an option. It is very well implemented; I've flown almost exclusively in VR practically every day for over three years. I started with an Oculus Rift S and I upgraded to Reverb G2. The cockpits feel like you are actually in them. I have both the Steam version and the web launcher version installed. They have different front-end interfaces but otherwise they behave exactly the same once you're in the game. The web launcher version might even be a little easier to understand, since it has the use HMD option right on the launcher. Both versions, with my Reverb G2 at least, require SteamVR to be running. Some things to know: - The VR experience is 360 degree visual but it does not support touch controllers. - The cockpits are not mouse interactive; nor are they touch controller, eye tracker, haptic feedback, etc. interactive. You will need to use keyboard commands or peripheral buttons. - Voice Attack works really well for issuing keyboard commands while you are in VR. There is a thread here where I and others have shared our VA profiles. - Steam purchases are not recognized in the web launcher version. However, web store purchases can be linked to your Steam version. This means you can start out from the web store with any other title; and if you find you would prefer the Steam version you can but Stalingrad there and link your web store content. My personal opinion on Normandy is that I'm not as motivated to play it as I am the earlier titles. The long mission flights can be grueling, especially over water. I recommend Battle of Bodenplatte first because the missions in it are often shorter and map feels more populated. Also, the Normandy D-Day missions caused me a lot of stutter in VR, while most everything else in this series runs perfectly well for me. FWIW, I think Battle of Kuban is the best title in the series, though I play Bodenplatte most often because of its aircraft. Edited June 17, 2023 by Skycat1969

Strewth Posted June 22, 2023 Posted June 22, 2023 If you like VR and buy from this site, then you also have the advantage of not using steamVR and going with OpenXR. It is more reliable and better overall experience IMHO. And as stated. This game can be flown either in full VR (fantastic) or just as well on flat screen. Cheers. 1

Try IL2 GB in VR and you will not come back to flat screen... 2

I agree with the "overall experience" of OpenXR that's better than SteamVR (smoother frames), but in my case it has much worse reliability which is the reason why I occasionally switch back to SteamVR. With SteamVR, I think I've had a CTD about once. When the connection with my Quest drops, I simply reconnect. With OpenXR, every time the connection breaks, I need to restart the game. 1

I don't get CTD at all with OpenXR. I have not used OpenXR via Steam, only on the direct version. I use HP Reverb G2 with Open XR on both IL-2 GB and Elite Dangerous.
Riderocket Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 Can be played with either monitor or VR If you buy from webstore you can buy any title first
KFX1 Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Stalingrad Water Levels Why are the river water levels so low, like it's a serious drought or something? Are they even navigable? If this answer is posted somewhere else, please let me know, because I couldn't find it.
