How separate sound channels for internal and external audio

I want to be able to hear coms through my VR headset and engine noise, guns, music ect through external speakers....potentially doing surround sound down the road.   Is anyone else doing this and if so what is the best way to set it up?  I mostly use discord for communications....a quick search of the forum revealed nothing,  many thanks

Set the output to your surround system as the default audio device and discord's to the headset's audio device.

I have been going around and around with this.  I can get them both either on the external speakers or the headset but can’t seem to separate the two. I should also say I’m running steam and windows mixed reality.  This shouldn’t be that difficult, what am I missing.

What does windows see in regard to your audio outputs? Your external speakers and your headphones, are they plugged into different outputs? Eg, your external speakers into your mobo's onboard sound chipset and your headphones into USB?

Make sure that the below is set to "off":

And in discord set the output device to the headset:

That really should be it.

Hello guys, bump on this one because I cannot do the same, I'd like to play VR with my Q3 but I cannot get the sound out of the 5.1 output (realtek with 3 cables going into an amp) that i have set up.

Of course it works perfectly fine with iRacing and all the others....

i didn't install windows mixed reality, is it compulsory or are there workarounds ?

At the moment I'm playing using SteamVR, not sure it's the best option so I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks
