Colmaniac Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 Hi, been enjoying this game and flying the HE111 recently I've change to hard and full control except for map and map markers. Im playing career mode and I recently discovered the AFN-2, seems easy to figure out how it works, vertical needle does direction and horizontal does distance. I'm assuming the AFN is set up for home base? If so is it possible to set up a target location? And how can you set this up for random things?
AndyJWest Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 The AFN-2 indicates direction to a ground-based transmitter, and signal strength. So unless you can persuade the enemy to set up a transmitter at the target, it isn't going to be much help for finding it. ?

Using the repeater/radio compass and afn-2 together, you can determine you are at the target. The afn-2 for distance, and the repeater compass for the course to the target from your base. Just know the distance meter changes with altitude, so learn your meter readings at your bombing alt. (Example: target is 100 km at a course of 45 degrees from the ndb on your base) There is a P/S needle on the compass that points to the ndb beacon. The P points to the beacon and the S away from the beacon. So in the example, the S will be on 45, and the P on 225. You can adjust your course left/right to get the S on 45 degrees as you get close to the target. Hopefully this video from requiem will help. Edited May 26, 2023 by Plurp 1
AndyJWest Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 I have serious doubts that that the AFN-2 was ever used as a means to measure distance IRL. Or at least, not as anything more than a very rough estimate. It indicates signal strength only, and there are far too many external factors influencing that to be of practical use for locating a target. If it can be used like that in IL-2 GB, it is a consequence of simplified modelling.
Colmaniac Posted May 26, 2023 Author Posted May 26, 2023 Cool thaks for the info and video, spent ages trying to get any info on the radio tracking kept comming up blank. Yea seems this is very basic, but will full realism and no map markers or tracking, then flying home shouldn't be an issue, getting to target will need better navigation lol. If campaign was over Kent region then wouldn't be a problem as I know the area like the back of my hand, yet in the middle of Russia there are no land marks or any form of good visual sites to match up with the map, so radio tracking getting home should make this much easier.

Whether just trying to locate your position, or where the target is located. Meaning if I fly on the radial of 45 degrees and my afn-2 is approaching half-way down the gauge, I should start looking for my target. Edited May 26, 2023 by Plurp
