Is AI able to land at all?

Recommended Posts

Besides of AI shooting 100 m to the left or right at a balloon, can they actually land on their airfield? Playing several missions with Jasta 4, stationed at Cappy, but every time I return with some mates, they just endlessly circle around the airfield. I know, weird question, but maybe it has to do with the airfield, dunno.

The Cappy-AF layout with the directional reference cross is a bit odd...

P.S.: Posting of screenshots do not work for me currently. Pic gets uploaded, but when posted it just disappears.

I've seen them land in qmb when damaged.

Gotha‘s for usual struggle with landing, I played a lot of missions but only saw a single successful landing, all others was crash (end in headstand).

When I played Jasta in PWCG some months ago (before new version) the AI crashes always with the trees (I forgot airfields name).

I only can guess, maybe the Dev‘s still working on fine tuning ??‍♂️

I suspect you just need to wait a bit longer to see them land.

There seems to be only one landing 'routine', and it's probably the one used for ww2.

It's frustrating as a mission builder when you want planes to land and get out of the game as soon as possible, when in fact 4 HP's take half an hour to land.

But of course with the ME things aren't always that simple..

I have seen HP's land one behind the other on a couple of occasions.. with the same logic as when they circle 20 miles around the field and land one at a time !

Maybe the 'command land' positioning in the ME affects it.. maybe waypoint priority..

An 'emergency land' or 'formation land' type command has been requested in the past, which would help get objects out of the game much quicker, but we're probably stuck with it how it is.

There's a few here that know the ME inside-out, so if you want a more detailed explanation of how the landing logic operates you could start a thread in the ME section ?

Lucky you, let's test this out.

10 years old Rise of Flight AI planes can land pretty well, as I have seen in let's plays. FC2 is a released game for 70 bucks. Besides of better graphics, but I am so far, very disappointed. AI seem to have a lot of issues, like hitting balloons, or last time, a flight of 6 camels attacking one, and I did shoot down all 6 without them reacting at all.

I once waited 20 minutes and nothing happened.

Hi!
yes, the AI airplanes are able to land if the mission design prepare it to land.
* I've seen the problem with big bombers performing crash lands like described here above.

There's 2 ways to program an AI to land:
1- When you put an airstart airplane and check it in its propertys to 'AI return to base decision'.
It will make him to try land when low fuel or damaged, otherwise it will still on duty until the very end.

2-  Set up a MCU-Command Land trigger to land conected to the AI airplane object, the mission designer can set it to happen by certain time after the spawn or an event happen.

In OBN server I've done that kind of setting to make a pair of scouts sent to protect the aerodrome come back and land after the sky around is clean.

cheers
Gus

I am talking about career mode. It must mean it is broken. Tested it by starting a new one with Jasta 4 as leader from the start. After the transfer to Cappy airfield, my flight and I took off, and then I send them back via command. And f****** again, they align themselves in a column for a landing at the orbit of earth, just fly over it, turn and repeat. By the way, they turn around the airfield in a ridiculous big radius for such slow biplanes. Looks like a copy and paste from faster WW2 plane routines.

There is clearly no attempt to land.

I already hear devs saying. "You don't need them to land". Same crap comment as in BON with no drop tanks: "just use air start".
WTF is next? Skipping dogfighting?

Alright, that's enough. If you think you see a problem, post a report with the required mission and track files. But, we're not going to go down this road of "I can already see what the devs are going to say."

Circling the airfield without landing isn't anything new. It was going on like this in Kaiserschlacht campaign. All you can do is land and end the mission. I doubt that the problem of AI planes circling without landing will be fixed anytime soon.

Too be clear,  I've seen enemy AI land at their base when damaged in QMB.

In quick mission, many planes, sometimes a damaged plane will depart the large furball.  If you follow them not to close, they go home and I've seen them land a couple of times.  Usually hunt them down and vulch them.  Lol
